Hey when is the optimal time to shift my 2001 gxe when trying to pull on someone? I mean at what rpm should i shift at for each gear? I was thinking right before after the torque starts the drop on the dyno charts... then again ... thats just a guess.

Us unfortunate b15 owners can't even hit 7k rpm. :D What's the redline on a 2001 GXE?

The optimal time to shift is when the next gear at the lower RPM is producing the same amount of torque as the current gear at a higher RPM, thereby placing you onto the rising part of the torque curve.

I think. :)

Hmm... I just realized that the GA18DEs make all their torque in the bottom end. How the hell do you drag a car like that? If you want to stay within the highest part of the torque curve, do you shift at like 3500 rpm? Anybody got any ideas? Sounds weird to me.

what about a 2k sentra gxe but auto. should you shift at lower rpm's or let it go as high as it can before shifting. like when i race should i get to 4th gear as fast as possible or ride each gear to its max.

First of all, you should have bought a stick, woman. Anyway, sorry for that, what my brother tells me, for you auto people when you race...shift 500rpm's before redline (or desired spot), or should I say click up your automatic thingy...that way by the time you shift, since it takes a bit you'll shift exactly at redline. :)

I am not claiming this is the right answer, but the maximum horsepower is made at close to the red line. Horsepower (not torque) is what makes the car go. So from an engineering point of view and not from drag racing experience when-HP drops off shift.

On the practical side- is it worth the shortening of engine life to beat someone on the street scene. If so go for the red line-I say.
