A cat-back refers to a Catalytic Converter Back replacement exhaust system. Essentially, it is an emmissions compliant aftermarket exhaust pipe and muffler that are located aft of the catalytic converter. Over the years, the name "cat-back" came to be used to describe this common type of exhaust system.

All this is reffering to is a complete exhaust system from your catalytic converter back (hence the name cat-back). This usually includes a mid-pipe and a muffler. Since exhaust systems increase performance by increasing flow and reducing back pressure, replacing all the the smaller diameter pipes with new larger ones are preferable. Having a system that switches pipe diameter three times isn't as effective. It may be nice to have a muffler with 2.5 inch inlet pipes but what about the rest of the exhaust?
