Okay so what about other letters? Okay, lets try E. Corvette, Chevette, Grand Marquis (okay but it sounds like an E), Cherokee and Grand Cherokoee, Eclipse, Ferrari (sounds like E) :) Tahoe, Protoge. Okay O, hmm....Silverado. Okay about about other car types that don't end in vowles? Suburban, S-10, Escursion, Exporer, Ranger, RSX, NSX, TSX, Pathfinder. Okay so yea most of the Japanese cars that are imported end with A. What about the ones imported from Europe?

...Elantra, Sonata, Kia...
those are korean cars and a korean manufacturer. but yea, they still end in 'a.'

*have you ever heard the best motoring announcers say murcielago? it's pretty amusing.

tee hee hee...

Sentra comes from two latin words:

Sen = Cannot catch me

Tra = just try

So, Sentra means, "Can't catch me, just try..."

I think it was the great Specvirilius who would race his chariot with Civisukilias that came up with that name...

It's just a name, Toyota maintains some of the names of their cars in Japan as they do here like the Corolla here is also a corolla there ..all the lexus's here have actual names in Japan
IS300 Altezza
GS300 Aristo
LS400 Celsior

Nissan as well changes the names to cars here as we all know...I know sunny cant translate to sentra..since Sun in Japanese is "Taiyo"..and to literally say sunny like "its sunny today" you would say "Hare" .....just a name I guess...

Out of all the ideas i heard... i think i would have to agree with Jars2672. Makes most since to me. I think that all manufacturers when creating a new car and trying to find a name for it put meaning behind it. A while ago i was thinking about what nickname i should give 2 my car, and after some careful thought i came up with 'Furor' which means chaos, disturbance, enthusiasm, etc. I think to give a car a name without meaning is pointless, and if u'r gonna do that, do what europe does... the european cars usually describe the car with the name.. BMW and Benz for example, they may not be actual names.. but the numbers stand for a specific thing.. for example BMW 328 -> Not sure how to describe the 3.. i suppose the basic size of the car.. 3 being BMW's smallest, and the 28 is the engine size which would be 2.8 liters.

C'Mon guys... its easy

Sentra=Sentry (one who stands guard)

I really think Sentra=Your mom is too fat to sit in it, so you need a bigger car, and this in turn makes the Sentra a compact car.

:D

Once upon a time in Japan

So the production coordinator of a new auto manufacturer went into the marketing offices and said we'll have the first models ready for North America next week so we need a name for the badging.
The marketing specialist turned to him and said "Dat soon?"

I don't know where they got Nissan or Sentra from sorry.

I think this is actually right. A sentry is something that you would trust, feel secure about and rely upon.

To my knowledge South Korea is the only other country in Asia to manufacture cars and export them worldwide.

Hyundai, Daewoo, and Kia are all Korean Auto Corporations and they are all manufatured in South Korea the last time I checked. Hyundai Excel was rated the most hazardous (likely to die, a death trap) car in the USA in the 80s by the U.S. Gov..

Korean cars have greatly improved by the late 90s especially with the Hyundai Tiburon which actually couple world rally races.

Other Korean products you might think is Japanese:
Samsung - LG (Goldstar) - Simpsons all colored in S. Korea

This is where I tell what Kimchee is, the most potent Korean pickle\sidedish strong enough to scare away mosquitos. Ingredients include: Chinese cabbage, lots of red pepper, shrimp paste, green onion, chives, sea salt, lots of garlic, and ginger.
