What have you read:
What have you heard:
What have you seen:

Me personally I have read 130 MPH
I have heard 135 MPH
I have seen 125 MPH

Some bozos' think this car can go 140 MPH. I just want the facts and the proof.

Well i believe the car is geared to do 160, since 80 mph is around 3100rpms.

I personally havent gone faster than 110 in my car and dont see any point in going that fast again. I usually keep it around 80 all the time.

Much beyond 130 is pushing it. Mechanically, the car might be able to do 160, but thanks to this little problem called the atmosphere, the car doesn't have the power to push beyond 130 or so.

The speedo is somewhat inaccurate at those speeds anyway. You'd be better off using GPS to get a more accurate idea of how fast your traveling. A radar gun would be best....but lets hope its a buddy of yours that is clocking you. :)

yeah i know the car wont be able to do 160. it probably will be able to do ~130.

What i meant by the car being geared to do 160 is that if we had enough power than theoretically the car could do 160 before we needed to raise the limiter or change the gearing.

ditto

not to mention wher tq falls off or what is commonlyknown as the brick wall. (in top gear)

How did you calculate the 160?

You need final drive, rpm's, 6th gear ratio and tire size. Not simplyu just doublingoulding what speed you are at at 80 mph.

Unless I'm just sonehow way overthinking this. I'll look for a calculator.

Ok, I know I'm a tad off on the gear rations, but at 6200, with a 0.68 6th gear and a 4.4 final drive, with 215/45/17's, the top speed is 152.

someone posted the formula several months ago. We determined that the mechanical gearing limit on the SE is around 145mph or something like that. I'd bet the spec-v's is higher.

the 6th gears ratio is .630 and the final drive is 4.429. i put that along with 215/45/r17 in calculator and it came out to 157.49 at 6000rpms.

So 2.51 mph in 200rpms is reasonable. Since the car gains 2.6mph/100rpms in 6th gear(170mph at 6500rpms, subtract the 2 different speeds and divide by the amount of rpms(170-157=13/5=2.6)

here is the theoretical top speed per gear

1st-30mph
2nd-53mph
3rd-80mph
4th-105mph
5th-130mph
6th-160mph

Looks good to me.

Does anyone know if we call pull 6th gear? ie. If you redline 5th at 130, and shift into 6th, will you slow down or gain nothing?

No way in hell, an eclipse with 210 horse will do about 130-137 depending and it has a real low drag coefficient like, 0.3 or something??

I've done 140-145 in a GTI but that was about 240 horse, 255 torque...

I doubt our coefficient of drag is that bad, and our frontal area isn't that bad either.

And Eclipse (AWD) will have problems with top speed simply because it's heavier and is has more drivetrain losses through the AWD system. (I just know someone is gonna say weight doesn't matter for top speed).

well that's for the GST which is faster (and lighter). and I think extremely slippery in the wind tunnel really (definitely more than out car) plus it's smaller...

This is from my post on another forum, but should help here.

Hey All again...

I'd first like to say that I have that issue of SCC - it's the April Vol. 4 issue, page 79 to be specific.
I could not find the top speed in that magazine I must admit, and will look through my others sometime to see if I can find it.

Now I did about 130 miles of driving today and tested the 120MPH in 4th gear just to see for myself.
I will write down the results.

Fourth Gear :
52mph @ 3000rpm
70mph @ 4000rpm
78mph @ 4500rpm
85mph @ 5000rpm
92mph @ 5500rpm
100mph @ 6000rpm

Ok, knowing that the rev limiter on this car is 6,100RPM I can't find any way that someone did 120MPH in fourth gear. According to my recordings, you cannot get to 120 in fourth gear, period. I found an average of 7-8mph for every 500rpm (see above). Now if you take another 500 rpm and add 7-8 mph to 100mph
you are still only getting 107-108mph at 6,500RPM...which again we cannot get to since the rev limiter is set to 6,100RPM. Check it out for yourself people.

I will post 5th and sixth gear speeds in another email.

Later,

just one thing they car redlines at 6200 and fuel cut off is 6400. Look at my post before i posted the maximum theoretical speed in each gear.

who cares who's clocking you, a cop could be clocking you at 130 mph and by the time he gets going you're 2 miles up the road and off the next exit(if you're smart and see the lights).

I read it, I still don't buy it. No way they're going up around 150 (145 etc) with se's and se-r's stock.

350 HP camaros do like 157 or something, and it's got a pretty low profile as far as the wind goes...

Lose 150-200HP and only lose like 12 mph, I seriously doubt it.

Like I said, the eclipse has 30 hp on us and what I figure to be better aerodynamic and it stops at about 137.

I could get my sentra to do 200 if I put way wrong tires on it and go by the speedo and not a gps.

Well really you don't even need the wrong tires, the speedo error is not linear, it's a joke near the top end.

It's not a viper folks... it's a 16 thousand dollar 4 banger.

It's quick for one, but no way it's aproachin 150mph in anything near stock trim.

I guess if you were in fact "squeezing the nos" it's possible, it'd have to be a damn big shot a WOT in top gear.

i'm scratching my head right now.. 4th gear @ 120mph? huh? i don't think so man.... unless i got a messed up transmission or my engine isn't producing the hp like your car is..

4th gear @ 120mph?

no way. i also did that test of the guy that posted a list of figures in 4th... my test was taking 4th gear to redline..

4th gear = REDLINE/6200 rpm = 103mph or so... 120mph in 4th is a JOKE.
