Hello folks,

I have a 2006 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition. I have one remote (Keyless entry fob) and two ignition keys. I would like to have one more remote and a key.

I checked with the local dealer and the key costs $40, remote $130 and the programming will cost about another $50. He claims that there is a chip in the key, is that true?

Secondly, what if I just buy remote key off ebay and do it myself, anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance.

you can buy the key and fob from ebay. you can program the fob using the fsm. unfortunately, i think the key can be cut anywhere, however, it needs to be programmed at the dealership i believe.

Calling around different dealership, one guy spilled the beans. My ignition does not have a chip so he will give me the key just for $10.

I didn't quite get the fsm part, can you please elaborate?

Last question, what if I manage to screw up something while this programming, will it affect the current key? or will it create any new issues with the car?

Thanks in advance.

if you dont have nats, the factory security system, there wont be a chip inside your ignition key, that usually gets read thru the ignition cylinder, which will cause the car to not start if its wrong. in this case, you dont need to goto the dealership at all. you can use any key that fits your ignition after it has been cut, obviously.

i believe the ebay item link for programming the key fob has the same instructions as the fsm (factory service manual). you can download one for free around here somewhere, use the 'search' in the menubar. you can also get one at allsentra.com/fsm

if you somehow mess up programming the key fob, you just try again. when programming the fob, it doesnt change or alter the security access. it just sends the access 'code' to your new fob. your old fobs will work as normal. also, as stated before, you can cut any key, no need to program a key.

To program the fob, open your door, get in it, and close it. Lock the car from the switch. Insert the key all the way in the ignition and pull it all the way back out fast and continuously until the hazard lights flash. Push the lock button on your fob. Try that and lemme know if it works
