Hello folks,

Yesterday, Engine Service Soon light lighted up in the morning. I took car to AutoZone and was told the code P0455, issue with Evap. I called up local guy and asked for the cost of diagnostics, he told me $100, essentially an hour of work. Called up the other place and was told $250. I asked him why. His answer was, he uses genuine Nissan stuff to find out these error codes whereas AutoZone uses a generic one. So there could be more than one problem.

I have hard time buying this argument of Generic vs genuine Nissan equipment to find an error code. I wonder if that really makes difference.

If it makes any difference, my car has 83K miles on it, car is in lot better condition than comparable cars (according to $100 diagnostics guy).

Thanks in advance.

to find a code, any code reader will work.
to diagnose the car, a better scanner will show more vitals.

P0455 NISSAN - EVAP Control System Gross Leak Detected

what model b15 do you have? do you hear any loose hoses? you have a gross/large evap leak, did you check your fuel cap, oil cap etc? it's possible the maf or tps are failing/dirty if you dont find air/vacuum leak.

I have 2006 Sentra 1.8S Special Edition.

Fuel cap is fine, don't know about oil cap. MAF and TPS don't know. The problem is, I don't know how to find these parts/places to check. I am a total noob..
But I do get gas smell sometimes in the car.

i'm having the same problem as well. it's been setting off the SES light ever since i bought the car. i had a new engine put in the car about a month ago so i know it's not the actual EVAP. it keeps coming on and i keep resetting it. i don't know exactly what is setting it off.

replacing the canister is not more than 2 hour job. however a canister is not cheap, you will need one if your is cracked open. the vent valve is less than an hour work, its only 2 bolts and an electrical harness, take a DIYer less than 5 minutes. be sure to use a genuine nissan oem vent valve if you need another one.

but from your code you have a gross leak. usually the ecu will diagnose the purge and vent valves before throwing a general evap code. things like cam&crank sensors, maf, tps, egr, fuel cap, pcv could all cause this if they failed horribly. assuming youve checked multiple time for vacuum leaks and broken/disconnected hoses, its gross leak, you should hear it.

I agree with JudoJohn. Best thing to do is get it on a smoke machine and figuring out where the issue is. Then you can start putting a price in mind on how much this is going to cost.

Also 98$ an hour seems extremely high to me.
