Hi.

I just joined because I'm having trouble with my 2001 Nissan Sentra SE (1.8)

I've had it since 2008 and I still really love the car...but it seems to have one problem or another continuously.

I've had issues with, I think it was called, the Air Flow Control Module. My car will just shut it's engine off while I'm driving. If I try to then restart it it will idle up to start but then drop back down shortly thereafter and die.

I have to manipulate the clutch and gas to get it up and going, and then have to drive one gear lower than I otherwise would in order to keep the RPMs up high enough that the car will not again shut itself off.

I think I ought to get a OBD Reader...but I don't know which one...and I'd just really like any input to help me keep this car. It has 149,000 miles on it at this point and I'm thinking about getting a newer one...but I do really like the car.

if you have an ses light on, you can bring it to autozone or advance, i think they pull obd1 codes as well. not sure where the afc module is? normally its an issue with the maf sensor, you can clean it using only cnc maf cleaner. be sure to use only a genuine nissan maf, or you will have problems continuously. have you done a tuneup recently? if you have codes, you should pull them.

Sounds like it's the MAF. A couple months ago I used MAF cleaner on mine and it ran much better after. While I didn't have any stalling it did idle very rough and there was a lot of lag when I hit the throttle. The MAF is at the very beginning of your intake system, right after the air filter box. The sensor is in a tube between the air box and the rest of the intake. It will have a wire harness plugged into it. You don't need to take out the sensor, just take out the tube it's in and clean it with the CRC MAF cleaner which you can get at any auto part store.
