Well I was driving down the road, belt was it's usual squeaky self this morning. It was raining heavily and humid out too. I hear this loud bang under my car, like I ran something over. I do a u-turn and look around but don't see anything, and I don't see any damage to my car when I get out. So I get back in and drive a mile or so.

My ABS and Battery light kick on... I pull over and open the hood, everything looks alright at a glance, and I check to make sure my emergency break is not on, it's fine also, so I decide to head over to autozone and see if they can pull a code for the ABS light and test my battery.

No code for ABS, and the battery was fine, but it said it needed charging. So I say to him him that means the alternator is not working properly right? and he said yep, that's right. So I look at my alternator, and then I notice the belt is not even on, and is frayed. So he said I needed a new belt, I buy the belt and then look at it closer, there is no pulley, and no arm, and only part of the bolt left, so the loud noise I heard was my pulley hitting the ground and bouncing back up and hitting my car underneath!

So long story short, don't ignore the squeaking, if your belt is squeaking, something is not on there properly, Sentras just don't squeak because they are Sentras, like other posters on here said when I searched after I bought the car lol. Our other cars don't squeak, not because they are other cars, but because they have everything on there properly.

well glad you figured out why it was squeeking. usually it squeeks when it starts becoming loose, and its time for a new one. its unfortunate you lost a pulley while driving. hope you didnt drive too far without a belt. if you can get the bolt out, you can get just an individual pulley from rockauto.com, or a junk yard might have a whole used alternator even cheaper.

good to know. Mine was making noise years ago and replaced the belts, but the mechanic told me and showed me that one of the pulleys was bad, but called several places and couldn't find one for me. apparently he greased it up put it back on and since then no problems at all. Glad you figured out your matter and addressing the noisy issue, lol. to me at least this is a great car if you care for it properly. (my gxe)
