just bought my 02 spec v, check engine light came on the day after i bought it with the sad p00420,(i think they just reset it a the dealer) and all the dealer is going to do it replace the cat..but im burning oil and all the signs of engine failure...been checking around here is what i found..
our local salvage yard has a 2.5 out of an altima 116,000miles for 1300.00
(with a comp test and leak down)
autozone and proformance both sell remanufactored engines for around 3000 auto zone has a 3 year warranty i dont know about proformance
rising sun motors has a rebuilt motor 1450.00 plus shipping with a 6 month warrenty...they do a comp test, leak down test, and hot run the motor befor they sell it. i have not check the price on just a rebuild from our local shops its probably cheaper but then ur trusting that they do it right... what do you think... i could use any help,or if you know another place that sell used motors let me know

That $1450 sounds pretty good. Havent heard of them before though. If you're going to shell out 3k at autozone I would just go to 2j racing instead and get one (http://www.2j-racing.com/drivetrain/qr25de-nissan-motor.html) I know I would trust them. Also you might want to buy a header while your at it to eliminate the precat in the header instead of just replacing it so you're sure it'll never happen again.

dont you have a warranty with your purchase? its burning oil, thats a defective motor, falls under most lemon laws, not sure how your purchase/state works. i guess if you drove without motor oil, it would just blow out on you. you should have at least 14 day grace period with the car, so you can return it for a full refund, especially if you have such catastrophic problems.

yea, buying one from salvage doesnt assure you that your new motor didnt already suffer from precat failure. i would also recommend 2jr or a nissan remanufactured motor. last year, it was approx $3k for 2jr to do the install, but i dont think your close to them. 2jr will also built a motor with 08+ headgasket and headbolts for you, but may take time for special orders. your motor is considered a good core, even with precat failure. for the $1500 range, the rebuilt motor sounds like a good deal, or you could rebuild the motor you have using 08+ headgasket and headbolts, this should be about the cost to have it rebuilt by a mechanic. you could also add a few things to the mix, like loctited butterflies, poly motor mounts, jwt bsr, etc.

if you follow thru, make sure you get your catless header, so you dont destroy your motor. you can probably sell the precat the dealer is installing, people in smog/visual states always need oem headers.

no... return that car to the dealer. call the news team and let them know what happened - that dealer is a scam artist. dont throw good money after bad just get your money back.

if for some reason your state doesnt allow for that:

i got a motor from LKQ with a 2 year full replacement warranty with only 60K miles for about 2200 shipped to my shop. there were probably less miles than 60K because it was a remanufactured motor.

knock on wood everythings been working good so far
