Ok so this started the a couple of days ago when it was around 115 degrees out. As I was driving down the road with the ac on, as soon as it shifted into od it started jerking bad... like it was missing. So i mashed the accelerator until it shifted back into third and the jerking stopped. This continued with or without the air con on for about thirty minuets, only after it shifted into od... then stopped and did not happen for a few more days... Then on a longer drive, approx 115 miles, it happened for about 5 minuets at around 55 mph but then stopped. This hasnt happened again and it did not give me a code. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue as well.

how are you on your tune-ups? did you change the cam and crank sensors recently? not sure exactly how the auto tranny works, but it could be something there or related to it electrically if it only does this is od. did you look through the troubleshooting in the fsm? its free download around here somewhere, just jump to the section on automatic tranny and find the troubleshooting.

Only recent tune-up was oil and filter... Also did the plugs since it probably still had the original ones in it, but I used the recommended NGK at .044 gap... I have been noticing a rough idle at times but only in drive but like the jerking problem its sporadic so I havent paid much attention to it.... I will look for the troubleshooting guide you mentioned after work today and see what I can figure out... Thanks for the help

when was the last time you changed the fluids? what fluid did you use?

edit: particular the tranny fluid? did you check the tranny fluid level? (the other dipstick)

It was about 6 months ago, used the recommended brand.... sorry cant remember which it was :/ and put some of the Lucas Stop Slip, wasnt having issues with slipping just the chirp (high speed clutch maybe?) when it would shift from 2nd to 3rd and it fixed this issue. Checked the fluid level when it started with the jerking and it was good.

the throttle body usually gives you a code when its failing, i would get a reman from the dealer. before you get a new tb, try doing those 3 relearn procedures, all 3 successfully. also, you could check your vin with a dealership, make sure your vehicle didnt miss any recalls. if you havent changed the cam and crank sensors, those are common problems and about $25 each for the new metal type sensors, but theres only possibility one of them is failing. there are recalls on cam and cranks sensors as well.

use an obd2 scanner and pull your pending codes, you may have codes pending waiting to turn on your ses light.

So no pending codes, went and did a little more googleing. Found a thread about MAF sensors and a similar problem with the jerking in OD.... so cleaned the maf with electronic connector cleaner as stated in the thread, currently waiting for it to dry then going to give it a test drive.

shouldnt hurt anything. make sure you disconnect your battery before the maf. make sure it completely dries as well. dont forget to do those 3 relearns once youve gotten that back in the car to operating temp. btw, im not sure the effects of electronic cleaner on the maf, there are specific maf cleaners out there that work great.

your saying your idle is better, but it still jerks when it goes into od? im not sure how auto works, but did you follow the troubleshoot in the fsm? the automatic tranny section alone is like 700 pages.

i got to page 65, but theres to much stuff for you to answer about how its shifting. so there's plenty of troubleshooting material. it starts with checking tranny fluid and previous condition of fluid, then moves to stall tests and line pressure tests. there are many pieces for the auto tranny that are not present on manual tranny. i would try to do that stuff in the troubleshooting, if you bring it to dealership, thats what theyre going to follow if they dont already know whats wrong.

Well I got my wish finally... after fueling up I started my drive home and after about thirty miles the SES light came on. P1278 and the readout said air fuel ratio sensor heater bank 1. I have done a little reading into it but where is it located and is there a way to test it with a multi meter?

P1278 NISSAN - Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Circuit Slow Response

usually when you get slow response, its time for a new one. this code didnt show me which bank, do you have more than one bank of o2 sensors? 2 o2 sensors is 1 bank, 4 o2 sensors is 2 banks. either way, the code i looked up is for you primary o2, which would be the first o2 is the exhaust stream, most likely the one on the top of the manifold. there is a way to test it, you need to test the ohm readout, use the specs in the fsm for correct ohm tolerances.

if you get a NEW o2 sensor, make sure it is NGK/NTK, or denso sensor WITH A CONNECTOR!!! for easy install. be sure to use anti-seize on the threads, dont get anti-seize on the tip of the sensor. DO NOT GET A BOSCH O2 SENSOR, YOU WILL HAVE MORE PROBLEMS!!!
