I am helping out a friend who owns a 2003 Nissan Sentra GXE with about 165,000 miles on it. I am just a shade-tree mechanic looking to help her out if I can.

She said it overheated and it has had issues ever since.

For some reason she said someone took the head off to examine the head gasket and I understand everything checked out ok. I do not know who performed the work but apparently he could not work on it full time as it took 3 weeks to complete. There is no explanation for the overheating.

After she got the car back it ran fine for a month. Then it started to hesitate a little on acceleration and now it will not start. The engine will turn over. I can hear the fuel pump when I attempt to start it. There is no spark.

I replaced the Crankshaft sensor. That did not cure it. Since the Crankshaft sensor is the same part as the Camshaft sensor I used the old Crankshaft sensor to replace the Camshaft sensor. Still did not cure the issue.

Any thoughts?

welcome aboard!

any ses codes? or abs/airbag codes? is it misfiring or just cranking smooth when you try to start it? not sure what a shade-tree mechanic is? is it drive-by-wire throttle body? can you hear the throttle plate moving? assuming the intake is clear ;)

timing is done using the crank and cam sensors, if either is failing, the car may not start, or may misfire or misfire randomly. they just read the internal signal plates and relay the signal to the ecu. they commonly mis signals, these are a very common problem. what are the results from post #2?
