so here is what"s going on.
my temp is set on heater and no matter which way i turn it, it doesn't change.
my blowing level is either 1 or higher, it won't turn off.
my ac (or heater now) will only blow out of the vents in front of driver and passenger, no matter which way i turn it.

can anyone help diagnose what the problem may be?

this one if difficult to diagnose from here. have you pulled the hvac unit yet? the knobs are cable driven, but it seems your saying more than one doesnt work? when you have the temp dial on hot, hot air will radiate from the dash esp while moving, or wherever the direction dial is set to, making it seem thats its not off. also, pull the knobs, hopefully you didnt strip them, if you did just grab some new ones. so essentially, pull the knobs, if theyre stripped, get new ones, then pull your hvac unit and take a look. there should be a cable holding the hvac unit in the dash, dont break the cable.
