well I bought my 03' Spec V as a replacement my 96' GTI 2.slow to make my daily 80 mile round trip commute. I was very disappointed when I got the Spec V and my mileage was horrible (at least for me, as my last commuter was the GTI averaged 28 while floored (exaggerating)). I have been getting anywhere from 23-26 combined. With the install of the Megan header it seems my gas mileage is living in 23.5 MPG range.
By using the Ecometer (made by AutoMeter) I seem to have nudged the mileage back into the 26 MPG range.
I would have thought the MPG shift point to be at 3k RPMS. WRONG, the Ecometer has me crusing between 1900 and 2400 RPMs to get me that extra 3 MPG's.
I thought the header would get me higher MPG's from the lack of restriction.

So what do you get and what techniques do you use to extract maximum MPG's from your Spec V?

well if you have a header, hopefully youve done this:

if your ses light is on, thats most likely richening out your afr, causing very bad mpg. other than basic tune-ups and maintenance, youre not far behind. considering mostly highway, you might be able to get just a couple more mpg, the higher your rpm, the more fuel you will be using while accelerating. hopefully your using 93+ octane, if you always use 93+, you can relocate your knock sensor. otherwise, try driving slower upshifting sooner. i cruise around at 40mph in 6th, so anything above 1500rpm (avg 29mpg city/hwy comb here) should be good for mpg as long as no inclines and your foot is light ;)

yes, I put in an anti fouler... the CEL is now gone.

I have the newer EcoMeter not yet listed on AutoMeter's website. Looks the same, just compatible w/ any car that has a ODBII. Still fine tuning the EFF (an efficiency adjustment), now at 90% and need to bring it lower.

I have upped my combined MPG's to 27.2 on the last tank (from 23.5) just by watching the gauge... doubt I can get much more out of the car in the crazy Chicagoland traffic.

Overall I'm happy VERY happy with it. It can also show speed (digitally) while the the Eco graph is running. The neat thing with this is I can shut down the dash lights and and have all I need to drive while the ****pit is in darkness.

here are the instructions

they won't sell direct... pep boys and Advanced auto has them for $99 bucks. Jeg's sells them for $80. Do an Amazon search, get the lowest price and Jeg's will match it (they want a vendor name to price match)... I got mine for $81 shipped:)
