This morning I took my 2001 Sentra GXE to the dealer to find out
how much life I had left on my front brakes. The kid at the counter called me up and told me that I have 10% left on the
fron pads. He told me the charge would be $235.00 dollars!!
I said, "Huh?...$235.00?? Why do you always have advertised
on the grease board in the waiting room that front brake service
is $99.95?" The kid repsonded, "I dont know." and than preceeding to give me a blank stare. He said they have to put new pads on and also resurface the rotors so the brakes wont
pulsate. Fair enough, I thought, I understand that. But why
would you charge me $235.00 for basic front brake service.
When I pressed the kid, he started to get really nervous and
uncomfortable.
Isnt that amazing??! Nissan hires these front counter service
writers with NO automotive mechanical experience!
Of course, I refused the work to done and ask to speak to the
service manager who I was told...."is off today."

I than went to two highly respected auto repairs shop in my
area to have my brakes inspected. I was told by both of them
that in fact I have 50% percent (NOT 10%!!) brake life left all
around and I was in great shape! Both of their fees for front
brake service, including resurfacing rotors would be right around
100.00. The dealer charges $235.00!!

Haldeman Nissan in Hamilton New Jersey are outright liers and
thefts! This place should be shut down! I am going to confront
the service manager on Monday and have her take me directly
to the technican who stated that I have only 10% brakes left.
I am then going to insist to put the car on the lift and show me!

Replacing front pads is quite easy to DIY. Generally you shouldn't need to have your rotors resurfaced everytime you replace your pads. You can replace the pads and then see if there are any problems, and then worry about the rotors.

PS: Dealers are offspring of the anti christ. My advice would be to make friends with some local car guys who will do work for beer. Thats what I do and my header install only cost me a $10 case of beast and was done in half the time that a dealer would have taken. :)

go get em!
:D

or at least make the threat and try to get something out of the dealership like a free brake job. (which you will need to have double checked by an independant mechanic afterwards if you're not sure of your ability to inspect the work).

ya i fell for that once. they resurfaced them and put on new pads for about $220.00. after abot 6 months there is now a half inch wide blue/black band in the cenetr of the rotor. NOW i wish i had bought some new rotors pads and SS lines and done it myself.

I wonder if the pads were even low? i only had about 40,000 at the time.
