Exhaust installed.. banging

911 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  japin
Well I installed my new cat-back exhaust on saturday, and when I drive over any bumps or dips I can hear the piping banging against something. I looked under the car and it looks like right where the piping with the resonator connects to the muffler piping it is hitting the rear axel.. the reason I think this is because the powder coating has been rubbed off where it previously was not. Is this common? I may not have torqued all of the bolts to specs, would that cause this? It's really pissing me off and I don't wanna screw up my $500+ exhaust, please help! (I can post pics after I get off work)

is the exhaust secured to all those rubber hangers underneath the car properly?
not sure if that could be the problem....
maybe u have a lot of weight on ur car and ur just driving over the bumps too fast...this happened to me once...and i scratched the underside of my exhaust...
blah, my magnaflow has been doing that for a bit, b/c my obx header pushed the exhaust quite a bit back. honestly i've grown use to the sounds.... although my friends are like "WTF what that?"
What Kind Of Exhaust Do You Have?
Check the rear suspension. My Vibrant catback didn't bang untill I installed my Hotshot header. So I cut 1" out of my catback and it cured the problem except for when I have people in the back seat. I'll have to figure out a better fix when I lower the car.

So anyway, yeah the rear beam was hitting the pipe.
I have the Apexi N1, all hangers are secure, all nuts and bolts in, I suppose my header might have pushed back the exhaust but I didn't have any problems before...
You might be able to shift it around under the car a bit by playing with the rubber hangers.
My exhuast hits somewhere near the axle with people in the back, too.
So I took out the back seat, and it's hanging in the garage. :p
check the hanger by your resonator. that might came off... if the N1 came with the hanger for the resonator. its by the 2nd cat. check there too that might were the banging is at.... if nothing at all... check ur trunk... there might be 2 people banging at each other. :D
lol, all my hangers are connected and after further investigation I found out it is hitting this black bar that is right after the resonator... do I really need this bar or can I take it off?
you can have that removed if you want... most of them on here removed theirs... i still have mine... you can prolly put washer on it so that it will lower a bit.
yeah... take that POS off... it won't do much for ya. Both catbacks I've had (magnaflow and now stromung) wouldn't even allow that thing to go back on.
Or if you don't want to remove it, you can get a couple of nuts that fit the bolts.. take the bar off.. put the nuts on the bolts, then put the bar back on and secure it.. that will give you some extra space that should keep it from hitting anymore.
chek all yo hangaz, might not be fastened the rite way. mah friend had dat problem with his greddy, he fixed da shiz by fastening it correctly, one of his hangerz wuz crooked. check it out
