Looks like Nissan and Honda are going head to head in a war for our dollars in 2002. Although many of the features of these vehicles were named in order to coincide with the arrival of 2001 (To commemorate Arthur Clarke’s & Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 1969 movie) these models were ultimately delayed but the monikers remain.
I’ve unearthed some neat stuff about the seats in the 2002 Altima SO (Space Odyssey). By all accounts, all front airbags are being removed. The newest safety feature will be ejector seats. Essentially, during a front or side collision, sensors detect the impact, triggering within a microsecond, both the opening of the oversized sunroof and the ejection of the passenger's through said roof. Once ejected (to about a 40' altitude) a small chute will be deployed to slow the passengers descent where they will (hopefully) land a safe distance from the wreckage. Pretty neat stuff, huh? Another safety addition to the SO line-up is the implementation of the Direct Access to Vehicle Engineering (D.A.V.E.) system that allows the on-board diagnostic computer to override any manual steering, braking, or acceleration input from the driver that may affect the overall performance or longevity of the vehicle. Cool! Not to be outdone, Honda is developing their own high-tech car management system for the 2002 line-up. Honda Aftermarket Locator (H.A.L) will prevent drivers from absurdly modifying their Civics by automatically detecting and disabling any non-factory "performance" components. Additionally, the paint and glass have been treated with a special additive that prevents the long-term adhesion of stickers and decals. Kind of like "plug-n-no play". Honda insists that this is for the good of the car and ultimately, the driver. Wow! Hurry up 2002...
