So basically it's this:

I am buying a used car from an owner and i want to run a reader before I finalize on buying it.

Now, say if the owner has a reader and runs the reader and clears the codes, will the codes still show up if i show up tomorrow with my own reader? Will the reader be able to see codes that have been cleared?

What is the drive cycle for a Sentra SE-R Spec V until codes show up?

If the codes cannot be detected after clearing and i buy the car and a code shows up after a few days can the seller be responsible for it being a lemon? I live in NJ and i do not know what laws there are on stuff like this IF there are any laws.

if they cleared the codes with a obd2 reader, or did the pedal dance, you wont see any codes when you get there. if the code cleared itself, like the ses light turned off while driving, you will still see a pending code when you use a obd2 reader. the drive cycle depends on the code, could be anything from immediate to like 50 miles or i think upto around 200 miles.

im not sure on laws in NJ, ask the dealer how long your warranty is, normally its at least 30 days, they are responsible for non-consumable malfunctions.

not sure about all codes, but when i cleared the P0350 code and drove the car once for about 10 minutes (with the problem not fixed) the code reader showed 'pending 0350' even though the ses light was not on.

my particular reader also shows all available sensors, and ones that have not had enough time to cycle enough times to show a failure will blink. for example if someone reset the codes to clear the service engine soon light and the heated O2 sensor had not cycled enough times, the OH indicator on the reader will blink. this does not mean the sensor is bad (or good). but it does mean that the ecu was recently reset.

so basically i don't know how you could fool the reader - it will either show a fault, or a sensor that has been recently reset. i would be very suspicious of either indication.
