Cheap Paint!?!?

2066 Views 29 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  jhchan
Ok I have a 2000 SE with Radium paint. There are TONS of little paint chips in front of my car and I KNOW I didn't drive through a rock storm! Also have found various other paint chips around the car (3-4). It seems like Nissan skimped on the paint for this car (Atleast mine) cause it doesn't seem like theres much more then one coat of paint on there. Anyone else experience any paint problems? Please relay any experiences you may have had so I don't feel so bad ;-)

jchan,

Do you do a lot of highway driving where you are following cars closely. With all the sand and salt on our roads right now I wouldn't be surprised of some sand truck pelted your car to death. :-(

I only have a couple of scratches on my front bumper because someone "skinned" it while parking. I noticed it when I got home....damn! I just used the touch-up paint that the dealer gave to me.

Well no I haven't been stuck directly behind a salt truck but I have been out dirving while they were on the highway. I do expect stuff like that to happen but my gripe is that the paint seems like its such a thin layer... in other words sub par. Did they do this to save money on the sentra? They had to skimp somewhere right?

Well, I've had my Heatwave '00 since last August. I took advantage of a quick Indian Summer yesterday (it was 70+ here) and did a good car wash. I had these concerns, being winter with salt and all, but didn't see any paint chips, scratches, or the like. My front license plate cover is cracked, however.

I've got several paint chips on the bumper, but none on the hood yet. They use gravel in Colorado, instead of salt. The downside is that it's like driving off road during the winter. You can literally see rocks bouncing off the front of your car. It sucks.

Speaking of bumper. Is there a good product to finish or wax it with. Is regular car wax/polish OK?

I have as many chips in 5 months as my VW had in 5 years. It was really resistant to chipping let me tell you. The paint on the VW seemed much 'thicker'. I have the 3 color paint on the Nissan too...

What 3 color paint do you have on your sentra?!??! I lost you there. I agree this paint job seems very thin (less coats?). Its very unfortunate that for the maxima they advertise a 29 step paint process and for our car its crap...

Three color paint, meaning 3 coat/stage paint job. I just wrecked my front end, and the body shop told me that they had a hard time with my paint, but since it was 3 coat/stage paint, it was pretty tough. It looks incredible too!

I remember my old bumper, and I had an unusual amount of "chips", but I had driven to West Virginia and I know most of them were from bugs and rocks. Let's hope this paint job keeps strong.

all the nissans that we had had the same problem with the chips, wax your car every 2 months, or try of putting one of theose visors for the hood, get mud flaps ( my sentera doesnt have them, the rear bumper by the wheels is white from chips, same with doors)

You can use regular wax/polish on the bumpers. It's just another painted surface. Personally, I use Zaino polish on my car. It's been 4 months since I applied it, and water still beads like the 1st day. This is important, because in Ohio it gets a bit too cold to reapply wax in winter.

I was putting on my car's bra yesterday, and noticed a couple big chips on the hood. The paint doesn't seem to go down too far. Sucks.

Yeah I know that paint is real thin from what I've seen. I'm glad its not just me. I thought I might have gotten a bum paint job. Now I guess we now where they skimped to get the price down....

Jhchan....i know what u mean....i also have a 2001 Radium sentra and i've gotten 2 chips on my front fascia too. But i've waxed it about 4 or 5 times since i got it in late september, so the paint stills feels like it just left from the dealer, don't know about the chips....do you ride on the highway alot?
