I have a 2006 spec v, that I purchased 2 days ago, now I was trying it out yesterday and found out that I can't get into sixth gear! At all! Not even when the car is turned off. It's as if there is no 6th gear, but that's not possible? Any suggestions? Is it possible that something's blocking it? Is it possible the previous owner changed the gear box to 5 speed? Also the lock on reverse doesn't work either, meaning you can put it in reverse without the lock.

normally, you pull up on the lever thats under the shift knob to put it into reverse.

are you sure you have a specv and not just an ser?
ser - auto or 5speed
specv - 6speed

did you pull up the shifter surround and check theres nothing blocking the shifter? check the linkages on the tranny as well, so theyre not too loose.

Yes, it is an SER Spec V, and the car was advertised as having 6 gears, and yes, I know how the reverse lock works, and its there, but It doesn't lock the reverse, I can still put it in reverse without pulling the lever. Also, how do you pull up the shifter surround?

the shifter surround - you pull on the trim piece from the ebrake side. so, you grab the trim in the area between the ebrake and shifter, and just pull up a few inches and it will pop out, then pulltowards the back of the car. there is one wire connected if you have the cig lighter so dont pull back to hard. ive seen many people in many makes of cars get coins and crap down there preventing the shifter movement.

dont forget to check your vin for recalls, (bring your registration/vin to a dealership)

also dont forget to read the precat and butterfly faq here:

I'll check that today, thanks. Also I heard the 2006 models don't have a butterfly screw problem? Is that true? Also, my lock for reverse isn't really working, is it possible that maybe that's why I can't get into 6th? Maybe there's a piece that broke and is blocking the shifter? Or it moved the wrong way blocking the shifter?

04-06 models have revised screws, doesnt mean they were loctited in there.

search for 'reverse lock' theres a thread somewhere about assembling the lockout, i dont have one :(

and you just bought the car? did you bring it by where you bought it? did you get a warranty?

No, I bought the car from an individual, so there's no warranty. H

HOWEVER, there is a warranty on the engine, because it was replaced less than 1000 kilometers ago, it's literally brand new. Actually, I purchased it from a lot owner. I called him this morning and he was shocked to find out that the car was even supposed to be 6 speed, he thought it was a 5 speed. I'm gonna get in checked out on Friday, but until then, anyone have a clue what the problem could be? Do you think that it might be a changed tranny? Or anything else?

i think you should bring it back to whom you bought it for false advertisement, you def cant say its a 6speed if its not, then dont have a clue about it.

It's too late for that. But anyways, I'm going to a transmission specialist sometime this week to see what's going on with that. But would it be a bad thing if the transmission was changed to a 5 speed?

as far as not getting into reverse, are you sure you are pulling the reverse mechanism right? shift into first, then try reverse again...could it be that your trying shift into 6th gear into reverse, but the lock is engaging? Our reverse lockout is really cheap and clumsy these things easily break and cost over $150 to replace.

im not sure why you would downgrade to a 5spd unless it was for a drag car. specv only comes 6spd

Alright thanks, and no, my reverse works, it's just that the lock doesn't work, meaning that I can put it in reverse without pulling on the lock.

have you checked the linkages and bushings, both inside the cabin and under the hood? you could have a bent linkage or messed up bushing. the reverse lockout is just for reverse, its doesnt lock out 6th gear. there's not much external to the transmission other than shifter, linkages, and bushings that link directly to the top of the tranny.

Alright well I'm getting it checked out this Friday, hopefully it's still a 6 speed and the previous owner didnt change the tranny. Also hopefully it's nothing that'll cost me too much. I'll also keep you guys updated on the situation. Once again thanks for your help.

ok stupid azz question but you didnt run thru all gears before laying out cash on a ride? nad ya know maybe try goin forward and backwards, the basic crap I would look at prior to handing money out on a private party car.

Reverse lockout is no biggie, I would shot a guess at it being disabled by previous owner, why, who the hell knows.

As for someone swapping in a 5 speed, dumbest crap evar, That shouldnt even be on your I should worry about X radar, more likely is some jackoff killed syncros or 6th gear altogether.

umm yea, GL
