This just started a few days ago & I plan on taking it to the shop but wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue. When starting cold, the brake & battery dash lights will stay on for about 5 minutes then both go out at the same time. I can understand one or the other but both? Anyone else run into this? 179K miles '00 2.0. Thanks..

assuming youve already checked your battery temrinals for tightness and grounds for good contact. check the battery voltage with motor on&off, sounds like your alternator is dead, or dying. when they are dying, they are usually not recharging the system at lower rpm. and yes, alternator failure is brake AND battery light, i think theyre on same circuit or something.

Yep, it was the alternator. Had the shop do it as I just didn't feel like messing with another vehicle right now. No complaints at all, though. Nearly 180K miles. 2 starters (1 under warranty), 1 MAF, 1 water pump, a clutch & now this. Car could drop dead tomorrow and wouldn't owe me a dime. Thanks for the replies.

glad you got it fixed

the hardest part of an alternator swap is getting the damn long bolt to start threading, lol.
