I'm pretty sure the crank seal blew.

I have two questions to start with:

1- Is this common with the 1.8?

2- Has anyone here replaced it themselves and do they have advice?

Thanks for all/any help/advice.

PS - I did do a search and did not find much (read nothing) regarding this and the 1.8

Could be a loose crank pulley bolt....the big one in the center. If that sucker is not tightened to spec it will blow oil out when the engine is running.

I had this happen when I did the unorthodox racing crank pulley.

Just a thought.

Is a pulley puller required to remove the crank pulley after the bolt is off?? Or does it just "slide off".

Thanks.
I definitely won't slide off. I somehow managed to make a 3 jaw puller work and afterwards I have no idea how....if you know that spot right there...there isn't a whole lot of room.

I would probably get a 2 jaw if you are trying to take it off. Even then it may be hard to get off.

Thanks for the info.

I need to take it off to replace the seal.

Any other useful info as to the type of puller to get?

I dont have my Haynes manual around right now but I know the FSM does not specify anything. Any Nissan branded ones out there?

Thanks.

My guess is a genuine nissan part would be 4 times as much as the one you can get at any parts store.

Based off what i used ( a 3 jaw puller) i would think a 2 jaw pulley puller would work better.

So a 2 jaw puller is what I will get.

My 1.8 is auto trans. I will be using an impact gun to get the nut off.

Any advice on how to prevent it from turning? Or is it locked when in park?

Thanks.
It may be locked in park for you, I can't say for sure. I had a 5 speed 1.8 so I had to have the car shut off, in gear, and someone sitting in the drivers seat standing on the brakes. That was nearly 6 years ago now so I hope I am recalling correctly. I think that is what the FSM says which is why I did it that way.

That reminds me: A penguin is driving across the desert, and notices his car is starting to overheat. He pulls into a service station and leaves the car with a mechanic. he goes into the store and buys an ice cream cone. he walks over to see what is wrong with the car. the mechanic comes over to him and says: "Looks like you blew a seal!"
the penguin says, "oh no, that's just the ice cream".:D

Making progress...

Need to torque down the pulley.

Anyone can help me out as to where this driveplate inspection hole is (need to keep the pulley from turning) ? (automatic tranny)

Only other option is the impact wrench wich I have read mixed opinions about.

As always, thanks for the help. :)

**UPDATE**

Car is now back on the road and all seems fine.

It was indeed a molested crankseal that was the issue.

The pulley was fairly easy to remove with a 2 jaw puller (thanks for the advice Black_B15)

Behold the aggressor, the accessory belt had snapped the week before, wrapping itself behind the crank pulley and molesting the seal into failure. Got the belts replaced at the shop but they did not bother looking around for other issues.

Part of the old seal that what floating around the hole.

A view of the wheel well with the cover and engine under cover removed.

Special thanks to jcrow for this very useful how-to on belt removal/install:
