Well, the old girl is finally on her last legs; after surviving a precat failure at 75k miles with only a blown head gasket (well, some oil usage, but not too bad), my '02 specv now has a rod knocking. Since I live on top of a mountain and work at the bottom, this is not going to last long.

I've got a good mechanic who says he can do the swap for $800 + parts, now I just need to find a motor. Unfortunately, money is pretty tight at the moment, especially with Christmas coming up, so I need to get a decent engine for a reasonable amount of money.

I see used engines on ebay for ~$800-1200, reman engines online from $2000-$3000; any other sources? Any reason not to buy a used engine?

i just got one from LKQ from an 06 with 60K on it with a 2 year replacement warranty (not including labor) for 2400.
Hmmm, 2JR has an OEM motor they'll install for $3k (to be fair, I can drive the car there because they are close). The best I've seen for a reman is $2200, and even used seem to run $1500+ for a decent one.

So I might save $600-700 buying used? I think I should shell out the extra, don't you?

the only reason i can say not to buy a used one, is you dont know if it has the same problems, or worse problems than what you have. but i guess as long you get a warranty. personally, id want a reman motor.
