What's with this rumor that your cas cap needs to be turned until you hear 3 clicks? I only turn until I hear one, and that seems fine. I have bout 1300 miles on it now.

it's basically just a rumor,,,but it is always good to make sure your gas cap is on tight,,,because of the fact that it puts a pressure seal....so no air comes in or out....

My wife has a 97 dodge stratus and we keep getting a check engine light and we brought it to the dealer and had it checked out and the computer was reading a problem in the fuel system so he went over everything and finally he checked the gas cap and it was loose barely on,,,and he closed it and reset the computer and boom all set.......he said it was picking up the fuel system had a leak...

Actually if you heard that from me, I read it somewhere on this board. After further thought I am with ChinoTooNice, keeping in mind what Sentra Styling had to stay.

I was told the same thing when I brought my car into the dealer with the engine light on... and yes, the damn gas cap was loose...so three clicks is good

I drove down to florida in my brothers truck "Mountineer" as soon as I hit Georgia the check engine light came on and stayed on the whole time I was down there and on the way back it shut off in North Carolina. The dealer said it is because the gas cap was not in tight enough. "Pollution Warning" They call it?? It never came on since. They said it is probably the climate change?????

I only single click the Sentra, but my '98 Accord actually stated in the owner's manual that you should listen for three clicks.

I've been 1 clicking it with no CEL so far, but I don't see why more clicks would hurt anything. I say Click to your hearts content!

I know what you mean about the Mountaneer gas cap. My father has one. If you don't put it on properly the check engine light goes on. The cap doesn't twist on like most, but instead snaps on. It's weird are first but you get used to it.

I used to just turn the gas cap until it is hand tight (so no click) on my Camry and Corolla but nothing ever happened. My dad had once left the gas cap of the Corolla on the roof rack so driving it without a gas cap on and it still was working fine. Now I know I am supposed to turn it until it clicks so I am being a good boy and try to follow the instructions. But the thing is, the gas cap is a ratcheting type so no matter how many clicks you turn it, it will be just as tight as the first click! No?

In theory you will get a little more with a couple of extra clicks bedause of the impact of the click. It's like a clicking type micrometer which you are in theory supposed to click 3 times. I don't think that has really anything to do with the gas cap though. I believe Nissan believes their customers are so dumb that they want them to click 3 times to be sure they get at least one good click.

When I bought my Sentra approx. 3 weeks ago, I was told by the saleswoman to turn the gas cap three times. She cited the problem with the engine light that others on the board have mentioned, saying it was kind of a quirky thing and as long as I turned my gas cap three times after refilling I wouldn't have any problem.

BTW, I go to pick up my plates tomorrow! The saleswoman told me that if I called and let her know when I was coming she'd even put them on my car herself! After sale customer service, so far, has been great.

Really kids, it is no big deal. The 3 clicks are like the clicking a torque wrench makes. If it clicks 3 times, it is on tight enough.

Why so tight?

Answer: OBDII. Gas fumes escaping from the tank are monitored now (unlike with the old Corolla mentioned above). The system monitors the tanks pressure, and if it is leaking (ie: loose or missing gas cap) the check engine light comes on, and you go to the dealer for a service (or so they'd like you to do).

So, to conclude, the days of the hill-billy rag pluggin' yer gas hole are over.
