When you turn the key into position 1 your fuel pump should prime the system. If you listen closely, you should be able to hear a faint hum for a few seconds. If you don't hear this then your fuel pump probably died. There should always be pressure in the fuel system as well.
Crankshaft sensor will also cause no-start because the ECU needs to know the position of the crank to know when to fuel/spark. Older cars may have still used distributors. They do the same job mechanically, but I know less about failure modes of distributors. Somebody else would have to chime in if this is the case.
