Hey All...so here's my first official post after my greeting. Please be gentle. :)

My 02 GXE climate controls are not working correctly. The fan speed switch is working fine. The rear defroster and AC on/off switches are working fine. I can't tell if the recirculator is working or not, I see the green light turn on but I don't think it's working. But what is definitely not working is the mode selection switch. It always directs air out of the front 4 vents and will never allow air to be directed to the windshield defroster vents or the feet.

I looked at the Service Manual and it looks like the mode select is cable driven. Cables comes out of the back of the climate control unit assembly and goes to the left (???) of the air box? Please help me out here. I'm unfamiliar with the anatomy of the whole assembly.

Also, what is a good test to ensure the recirculation system is working? Is that one driven by an electric motor? Maybe the doors are stuck?

Also, do I literally have to take the entire dash apart to get to the cables and where they attach? Sounds like a lot of work!

Please share your knowledge. Would like to hear from others before I attempt to tear into this!

Thanks!

most of the venting system is under the dash, so yes youll have to pull some of your dash apart. the hvac controls are easy to take out, just take out the middle pieces with radio.

normally when you hit the recirculation switch, the blower will push air out faster with recirculation on. it does sound like the cable has become dislodged if you can select the air direction.

hey, i have the same exact problem. i figured out what it is too. when you pull apart the dash and look at the back of the climate control dash, there are two cords that come out from it. they are silver with a black sleeving. the silver cord is connected to gears from the back of the unit to a door that will swing in certain directions depending on how you turn the knob. well, i'm my 02 sentra, there are clasps that hold the black sleeving, around the silver cord, to the back of the climate control dash and in my case the clasps have broken off. So, this means if you turn your knob all the way to the right, it's going to stay on that setting because you're pulling the cord as far away from the swinging door as possible and because the clasps are broken it has no way of pushing through the black sleeving anymore when you try to change to another setting.

p.s. taking apart the dash is actually really easy.

i hope this made sense to you, and it solves your problem.

Will be pulling apart the dash this weekend and looking at the anatomy of the system. I was afraid of broken parts, but we'll see what I find. Hopefully I can jerry-rig something up to make it work again.

Thanks! Will keep an eye out for broken parts that used to be clasps.

Well, I got to take a look at an 01 Sentra GXE at one of our local yards. There is a black metal clip that holds the cable to a rocker arm that controls the position of the doors inside the air box. I think mine might have fallen off at some point in time. I got the clip, and as many of the arms as I could. I'll see if I can get some time to throw them in tomorrow. Son's b-day party so probably next weekend.
