I actually did not know that. The wide open throttle attempts on my part probably started at day 3 of the problem.

Yeah you cleared the raw fuel out of the cc by holding the throttle open... so maybe its a bad injector causing a misfire and when shut off its leaking fuel (injector seal?) But you should definitely have a code or two...

Definitely running like crap, definitely has the check engine light on...

30 minute update: It will start and run every time, but it smokes and doesn't quite sound right and the CEL is on.

Of course, I gave my buddy back his scanner, and I don't trust it driving to Autozone in 5 oclock traffic.

Any thoughts?

PS - Just to butter you guys up a little bit,[butter]I've been coming to Nissan forums on and off for 3 or 4 years now and this one is by far and away the best one I've been to.[/buttering]
did you crank before or after you changed CPS if you changed it?

there is nothing in his post that I read that would indicate a blown or leaking headgasket

Well, I ran the codes and it came up with p0302, which is 'misfire detected in cylinder 2'.

Not as conclusive as I had hoped.

However, I think I know my next step:

I'm going to swap around the coil packs and see if the code changes to one of the other cylinders.

Thoughts?

Ok, so I went to swap the coil packs and wouldn't you know it wouldn't start to set another code.

Pulled the rad cap and the level was low. Looked at the overflow bottle, also low. Pulled the dipstick, and she looked a little suspicious. I'm going to do a compression test later on, but it's looking more and more like the gasket.

Although I am pretty surprised that such a low power car, driven by my wife (not a heavy foot) blew a gasket.

But, what do I know?

Anyone have a good writeup on the 1.8l head gasket swap. The car hasn't been overheated (this much I know), so I don't think a mill is necessary, maybe just a new gasket and bolts.

On my ol' turbo dodge, I could swap gaskets in as little as 2 hours...this one looks a little tougher, though. ;-)
