No need to wait. While it's idling, just jiggle the wires going to the coil. See if it does anything. Just make sure there's no open wires that you're touching or it will shock you.

When was the last time the fluid was replaced? Jerky trans could be because of really thick fluid. Transmissions fluids are thick when cold and they thin out when warm.

Unfortunately, there is no DIY way to test out the sensors unless you have a scope (oscilloscope). I would just buy a pair of cam/crank sensors and see. They are cheap enough.
