How do you tell you have a worn out clutch?

Well I doubt I have a worn out clutch, and it may be all in my mind.

I have 12000KM on my car, but for some reason it just feels a little diffrent when I engage gears. This is my first manual car so I don't know what to expect when things break down.

I was reading and some people said if your clutch is worn your engine/speed won't accelerate as fast? Is that true?

I'm not really hard on the car or anything.

If your clutch is worn, typically what you'll experience is called "slipping", where the friction has worn down to the point where it can no longer "grab". When you hit the gas, the engine speed will start increasing but the torque won't get immediately transferred to the tranny and wheels as you'd expect and you'll experience the sensation of revving without getting anywhere.

Now, that's just if it's *worn*. If there's something else wrong with it, then you could experience any number of symptoms. But yeah, as they wear you might feel a little difference...until it starts slipping(and I'd bet you have a ways to go, before that happens) I wouldn't worry.

basically an easy way to tell is when you shift and let go of the clutch, the car will rev like you still have the pedal depressed. it will eventually drop into gear, depending on just how worn your clutch is.

Also, you may start to smell something burning...your clutch. Before my clutch went in my old car, I got to the mall and it smelled bad....a few weeks later the car wouldn't even move lol. Also, going up a hill is when you're most likely to all of a sudden see the engine rev when your speed doesn't actually increase because the clutch is slipping.

ah..... hmmm.... is there an approximate mileage that your clutch should be good for.... or does that depends on your driving habits and styles..??

Do you ride the clutch? You said it's your first manual trans car.

If you want to check if the clutch is slipping badly then get going about 20mph or so then shift into top gear and floor it. If your tach moves before you do then it is slipping. There is also an engine braking technique as well but i forget how its done...

20mph and 6th gear wont prove $hit it shouldnt be worn out this early i mean if you ride it or drive on hills a lot i could maybe see but that would be extreme.....anyways when its worn out you'll notice it slips under hard acceleration.....

C*z had it right, just redline it in first, throw it into second, and drop the clutch... if the car "grabs" and keeps accelerating consistantly then you're good, otherwise.. the clutch may start to be on its way out

Redlining it and dropping the clutch is better than bogging the engine? Damn im throwing out all my physics and science books... 2+2=5!
