Help me pick a 2012 mid size SUV
We are looking to trade the 2010 Mazda CX-7 in for another mid-size SUV. Any suggestions? So far the Equinox & Outlander look good.
What we need: -good gas mileage -safety -room & comfort -reliability We have the 2012 WRX for the fun stuff, the SUV needs to be reliable, safe and offer good gas mileage. I've never bought a domestic vehicle before, but the Chevy does seem very nice. Any input is welcome!

Equinox is a decent choice, but real world gas mileage seems to fall short of the EPA figures for most owners. Outlander is a Mitsubishi, a company that's always on the verge of leaving the North American market.
If I were buying a small SUV, I'd look at the CX-5 as it seems to be light years better than the CX-7 with regards to design, quality and gas mileage. A RAV4 V6 would be a good choice, too. Lots of power and excellent fuel economy. I'd also consider the Tucson/Sportage, or if you need more room, the Sorrento. The new Escape looks promising, too. My only recommendations as to cars to avoid entirely are any SUV made by Subaru and the current Ford Escape (former owner of both).

my wife has a FWD gen 2 Hyundai Santa Fe. I personally hate all SUVs but I cant really complain about it. it has the 3.5l engine and moves pretty quick but will still get decent gas milage if you control yourself. it has 95k on it and still looks and feels like a new car, and hasnt had anything go wrong with it. if you want to do anything other than driving on pavement you will need 4wd though. Her brother has one with 4wd and uses it for his lumberjacking business and he loves it... only thing to worry about is that the gen 3 comes out in 2013

I have the 2010 Outlander SE AWC and I love it. Its comfortable, good size, I get about 25mpg but I do A LOT of highway driving. I've had my car for two and a half years now and have 65k miles on it without any issues. Just the usually wear and tear things (filters, tires, etc). The car also has a tailgate which helps me because I have a lot of equipment to lug around. It has a 3rd row seat but its really not that functional.
My wife liked my car so much that she got the Outlander Sport. Its smaller but has a lot of nice features. |
