Reverse lockout?
Did these cars come with one? If so, how it it activated? I've never driven another Spec-V and I bought my car somewhat disassembled. Now that I've got it back on the road this seems like a glaring omission if the car came that way. I have to be very careful on the 4-5 shift not to push the shifter over into the top of the reverse gate. The shifter in my car is an aftermarket unit, although I have no idea what brand (it has some purple bits on it if that helps).

reverse lockout is a pull up level thats under the shift knob. you need to pull up on the lever to shift into reverse, if you dont pull up its not supposed to go into reverse.

If your shifter has "purple bits" or looks aftermarket, I would highly recommend removing it asap. Any aftermarket short shifter that replaces the actual shifter will eventually snap your linkage, which will effectively leave you stranded (or at least stuck in one gear) until you can get it replaced.

Best bet would be to get a shift "Adapter" that clightly changes the geometry of the shift at the xmission housing. Mine's been worry free for 5+ years...

Part of the "partially disassembled state" of the car when I bought it was a missing shift knob and apparently a missing reverse lockout assembly. The orange plastic hook to the left of the shifter (under the shift boot) appears to be part of it, but the lever under the shift knob is gone. Oddly enough, a couple days after I originally posted this, my right side shift cable snapped. Fortunately, I was only 2 blocks from my house.
