Blend Door Actuator problem

There seems to be a problem with the blend door actuator in my car. I took it into Firestone to have it serviced and for them to check on the A/C as to why it's not working. Before I go into details, I want to explain the experience I've been having.

- A/C turns on and runs fine
- A/C has been recharged and checked for leaks
- Thermostat does not control levels of heat or cold
- Still have control of vents (floor, top, defrost)
- Hot air blows out constantly
- When A/C is on or heat is on it blows HOT air

Okay, so now you know what I've been experiencing.

The Firestone manager said there is a problem with my blend door actuator that controls the A/C core. He said to get to the actuator they are going to have to remove my dashboard. This, he said, will be a 6 hour process and will cost me over $600 for the labor/service. Once they get to the actuator, he said it's either one of three things. The actuator door is stuck in a closed position and need to be tampered with, the actuator has been unplugged or the actuator is broken.

Have any of you experienced this problem? I've searched the forum and found nothing on blend door actuators. Is it possible that I'd be able to remove the dashboard by myself (with help from friends) and fix it. Is the shop overcharging me on this service?

I would think you would be able to find a better shop rate of $100 but then you have to understand to take apart a dash is a pretty big job. If something goes wrong and your airbag pops out you are looking at a minimum of $500 to get that fixed. If you dont know much about cars i wouldnt recommend it.

Is this pic helpful?

I stole it from one of Y2KSE's posts. Maybe with some diagrams from the FSM you could do it yourself?

That's very helpful. I'm going to tackle this with a few of my friends (some being mechanics). I'll keep you updated as soon as I get started.

If you have any other information on this part or problem, please let me know.

I am having trouble with the partial copy of the FSM i have. You need to review a couple of pages in the section on testing this linkage. Try to find an intact FSM to look at. This looks like it will require many beers. Good luck.

I'm thinking we're going to make a cookout out of this. hahaha.

I have the FSM on my home computer but can't open it here at work due to the .rar filetype.

Here's where I got it from.

Please keep me updated with this. When you fix it could you PM me? I have the exact problem.

One thing to check though. With the engine running and the A/C on feel the low pressure tube of the A/C (Larger one running up front of engine next to header) and see if it gets cold. Mine stays warm. If it stays warm it is not an issue with the door. My compressor turns on, clutch engages, I have refrigerant in the system with pressure. I believe it may be the Expansion Valve being siezed. That would include a ton of work to replace so if it is that, it's windows down for me.

That will be helpful for you.

Pg 77-78 shows the removal of the evaporator and access to the expansion valve.

There are also diagnosis and repair notes in there as well as images and how to's for the rest of the system.

I believe your issue will be evacuating the system properly so no moisture is present in the lines before recharging.

I have the same problem as the OP. The blend door does not operate and is stuck in the full heat position regardless of the position of the temperature knob. I would really rather not have to pull the dash to fix this. Does anyone know of any shortcuts?

I may look into disabling the heater core. Then at least I would just have outside air blowing into the cabin instead of heated air.
