HOW-TO: SR20DET (GTiR) into B15 QG (QG18DE)

The car was finally taken for a test drive yesterday, and everything is running perfectly! Before I begin the write up, I'll quickly summerize the timeline of the project!

Please note: This write up is assuming you will purchase the entire front clip of a JDM Nissan Pulsar GTiR! This means that I was able to use the GTiR Computer, harness, radiator, and other misc. parts. I will also state what additional parts will need to be purchased if you only bought the engine/harness/ecu only!

Timeline:
  • Feb. 05' - 1994 Pulsar GTiR Clip purchased
  • Feb. 05' to Nov. 05' - No progress (purchasing parts and waiting for winter)
  • Dec. 05' - QG18DE engine removed
  • Dec. 05' - ECU+Harness+Cluster Wiring
  • Jan. 06' - SR20DET installed along with tranny
  • Feb. 06' - Project completed* (Awaiting one last part)
Turbo parts purchased:
  • Walbro Fuel Pump (high-flow)
  • Front Mount Intercooler
  • 3" Cat-back S/S (Magnaflow)
  • 3" High-flow Cat S/S (Magnaflow)
  • 3" Downpipe (Magnaflow)
  • Intercooler Piping Kit (Various sizing from 2"-2.5")
  • Gauges: Boost, Air/Fuel, Volts (S7)
  • SR20DE Fwd Tranny (B13/B14/B15 will work) *B15 5sp. Lsd Tranny is highly recommended!
  • Uprated Clutch+Flywheel Combo (The GTiR Clutch+Flywheel will work with modification to the transmission case; for the ease of installation, I recommend you purchase a clutch/flywheel combo to fit the fwd tranny specifically!)
Option One (If you do not want to purchase parts from a B15 SE)
Fabricated/Purchased Parts:
  • Tranny Mounting Bracket
  • Passanger-side Mounting Bracket
  • Rear Mounting Bracket
  • Front Mounting Bracket
  • QG18DE Crossmember Modification (Re-drilled to allign with the SR20DET)
  • GTiR Radiator (Need to make custom brackets to hold it in place)
  • Driver/Passanger-side (Left/Right) B15 SE Axles
Option Two (Easier if you don't have access to tools, but may be more expensive)
SE (2000-2001 SR20DE) Parts Needed:
  • Tranny Mounting Bracket *May come with the Tranny you purchased)
  • Passanger-side Mounting Bracket
  • Rear Mounting Bracket
  • Front Mounting Bracket
  • Crossmember
  • Radiator
  • Driver/Passanger-side (Left/Right) B15 SE Axles
Electrical Work:
  • ECU/Harness Wiring to Cluster
  • Gauge Wiring/Installation
Notes:
  • If you purchase a B13 tranny, you will have to use your existing speed sensor from the QG and wire it up specfic to the GTiR ECU. Refer to the FSM for specific details
  • My installed was based on Option one, as my access to tools was unlimited. Purchasing SE parts as stated in Option two is probably more feasable for the regular mechanic but may (or may not) end up costing a bit more
  • The price of the swap can be anywhere between $5000.00 - $8000.00 depending on the shop, mechanic and their experience with Nissan engines.
  • My engine management currently consists of running the stock GTiR ECU along with the Apexi SAFCII! With the GTiR ECU, the timing is set to 20* which means you'll have to use the highest possible octane gas (94+ recommended). You may lower your timing to 16* so that you may run lower octance gas, but you will notice a slight decrease in your power!
  • Because we fabricated our own mounting brackets, we were able to re-use the actual QG mounts for the new engine install. This will only work if you make your own brackets!
If I have missed anything, please let me know or if you would like me to include something else I will do so! Post questions in the thread and I will do my best to answer them or hopefully other knowledgable members will chime in as well!

Cheers,
Jaksa

I'll upload some pictures when I get home this evening, but the only in-process pictures we took were the ones of the custom brackets we made!

I'll have to either post crappy pictures showing the finished product or wait till the snow dissapears

The front clip was purchased from a friend of my mechanic. The guy who got us the front clip lives in Japan and visits Family and friends in Canada. The front clip cost me $2300.00 Canadian shipped!

Cheers,
Jaksa

Awesome write-up man!

What was the rough total figure?

Some questions:

Was the rack-and-pinion steering rack able to stay in its stock position?

Was there any fabrication to the engine bay for the swap other than motor mounts?

Did the GTiR harness tie easy into the wiring going from where the QG ECU was connected to the cabin harness? The wires on the engine bay picture in the corner where stock ECU is located.

More then you can afford, pal!!!

Let's just say it was a lot of money, anywhere between $5000.00-$8000.00 lol! Price shouldn't be a concern if you are considering this engine swap, finding the right help is more important!!!

Oh yeah price is not a problem. Just trying to get every possible question knocked out in this to put a end to all the QG swap threads.

And I am SO close to getting the QG running. Waiting for tax refunds to come in, and birthday to get here...then INTERNALS!!!!! /end

Would you answer the questions I ask you please.

Would a backyard mechanic attack this? (had to ask)

A standard ASE certified technican SHOULD be able to perform this work in a day with standard air tools and some special tools?

Doing the wiring was basically matching up wire diagrams from the donor vehicle and the QG vehicle?

btw- I know some of these...just this is the first REAL thorough write-up of the task being done...so yeah since it is still fresh on your mind we could possible put a end to all the questions, and post this thread as a sticky.

1. Yes the steering rack stayed in the stock postion!
2. No fabrication needed to engine bay, just the mounts but you may also purchase the SE ones which woudl eliminate this step!
3. We relocated the ECU to under the passanger side front dash. We also used the GTiR harness and ECU which came un-cut and all we had to figure out was the cluster and electrical. The bin where the QG ecu was is now empty, kinda like a secret stash stop
