again dude, with the gas prices over there, it's 2-3x as expensive per 'gallon' than it is here.

Diesel will be a great, efficient, and reliable method for you. They've been using diesel over there for decades to great success (but they're big pussies and won't bring it here for our masses)

It won't happen here bc :
1. peeps see gas as cheaper than diesel fuel
2. peeeps don't see as many diesel pumps as diesel
3. peeps view diesels as smelly and underpowered
4. It would require more expenditure to dealers to work on diesels
5. Carlines and models have been shrinking adding diesels doesn't go with that trend
6. New ventures in this economy aren't happening.

Also if Toyota, Honda, and Subaru don't have them here their marketing told them something.. And truthfully I wouldn't want one. My brain tells me it would be a good idea but my gut feeling says "no". And I'm an engineer.

Lol you posted my car! The N16 Almera DCi 136 (mine is the SXE which is top of the range and comes with everything). Same chassis, and turbo diesel engine with a good bit of pull. It'll be a home from home

Bimmer and Benz have been making and selling diesels successfully in Europe for decades. Shoot, a lot of the old turbo diesel benzes from the 70s and 80s are still on the road today. I don't think it's so much a marketing thing as it is that the car companies haven't tried.

VW makes money selling the TDI here, bimmer sells a diesel 5 series here now, and benz sells a diesel model too. both are very quiet, make good power, and get excellent mileage.

The BMW and Mercedes diesels have had pitiful sales figures here. I guess the person buying a $25k VW is more likely to appreciate the mileage gain than the one looking for a $60k car.

VW usually can't keep the TDi on the lot. I know the Jettas are impossible to find, since my parents were looking at them. BMW and Mercedes are a different story because of the snobs that typically buy them in the US. More affordable diesel options are coming very soon. Subaru has designed a diesel boxer engine, Fiat/Alfa/Chrystler will have a few, and I even heard rumors about some performance diesel cars coming.

The Euro Nissan Almera / Primera don't look that good in person.

People in the UK didn't want diesel either, but when you are looking at 6GPB (>9 USD) a gallon, and you write 40-50 MPG on the side of a diesel hatch, and tax people based on fuel consumption (annually) people start to think different. Now they're >50% of the market.

I'll be living on or near a military base and IIRC they pay US prices for fuel so gas vs diesel is mostly irrelevant

:edit:

Yup

Generally the truth except for the lot of us (which is actually a good portion) that like the torque and boost of a good turbo diesel . check out nissan-navara.net, tdisport.com, and tdocuk.com for just a small example of how many out there really like their diesel power .

BMW seem to make the best diesel engines followed by VAG. Must say though I really like my Nissan diesel .
