Grandmother passed away 2 months ago, uncle passed away Friday night. Nephew has been in NICU since he was born April 10th on life support. They are taking him off the breathing tube tomorrow and he will most likely pass away then Pretty crappy start to 2012 so far.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Sometimes it seems that life throws a lot at you at once.

There's not much you can say or do. The pain involved in losing a child is unbearable. Nothing can change that. Make sure you send a card and just be there for your Aunt and Uncle. I hate that cliche "let me know if there's anything I can do". Can you make a real contribution like offering to do their yard work for a month or so? I'm sure there's something you could help them with. They will be in shock for the near future and probably won't care about much.

I don't know what you could say that would make that situation any better.

Thanks guys. They live in Colorado so not much I can do as far as helping them out in person. I think we will try to get some gift cards of food places nearby them...I know food is always good and it is nice to be able to just grab something and not have to cook.

We are packing up and driving there tomorrow. We are bringing our 4 week old girl so this should be a big adventure. My mother in law is coming with to help with our girl while we go to the service and stuff...kind of a bad situation too with our girl being born so close to the same time.

Was it related to an illness or accidental?

Nothing good ever seems to happen in Colorado. Very sorry for you and your nephew's family.

Well it is a weird story. He was born. They took him home after the 2 day max insurance gives you and at this point he was "fine". They took him to the pediatrician the next day because he wasn't eating and his temp was really low...like 94 degrees. So they took him to the hospital. Hospital says he has an infection and this and that...at one point he is moving around, eating and doing fine. He starts to do worse again and they transfer him to the Children's hospital. They run all kinds of test and things and his heart is good, his lungs are good, but for some reason his brain isn't regulating anything like it should. They said there were some parts of his brain that were maybe underdeveloped, but they weren't sure what the real cause was and said there was nothing they could do. So they had him on a breathing tube for a while, but they didn't want to keep him on it forever and took it out. He passed away about 5 hours after they took him off the breathing tube.

Sorry dude. Pretty heart breaking times. I lost my mom, uncle and my wife's stepdad recently.

It really hurts, but the bad times pass just as surely as the good times do.

I really feel for you. Gift cards to restaurants is a great idea, everyone likes to eat and it's comforting. I have an 8mo old girl, my wife is 5mo preg again, and her father in law just passed away. My wifes sister and husband (same age as us) can't have kids and seem to have shied away from us since my daughter was born, more so since the 2nd preg. It's not the same but I get the reality of your situation (esp. death and awkwardness) and I'm sorry. Take comfort, give it, God bless.

I think there was a lot of compassion in the hospital's decision. There was a local story recently of a shaken baby that was "saved." The child is blind, can't feed independently and is completely helpless. The child suffered such severe brain damage that the mother is left with a child who will never talk, function in any human-like way and will require 24/7 care for the rest of her life. IMO, that is a fate worse than death for both the child and mother. The dad, who is now in prison, got off easy IMO. His prison sentence will end.....the mother's won't.
