What short shifters are made for my car?
5-speed XE/GXE/1.8/SE can all use short shifters designed for previous generation SR20DE-powered vehicles. Here are the options:

B&M

  • Fixed height.
  • Comes with shift knob.
  • General consensus on the forum is that the B&M is the highest quality shifter available providing very short, distinct throws.
  • Possibility of rattling/buzzing, usually in 3rd gear. This can be remedied by bending or otherwise modifying the heat shield.

Stillen

  • Fixed height.
  • Pricy.

SMC

  • Adjustable.
  • No longer available as the company is no longer in business.
  • Possibility of rattling/buzzing, usually in 3rd gear. This can be remedied by bending or otherwise modifying the heat shield.

Pacesetter

  • A clone of the SMC shifter.
  • May also be difficult to find.
  • Possibility of rattling/buzzing, usually in 3rd gear. This can be remedied by bending or otherwise modifying the heat shield.

eBay (OBX, "Nismo", Robo shifter,etc)

  • Not much is known about these things.
  • May break with no warning

Options for QR25DE equipped manual transmission:

NISMO

  • Primarily utilizes a shorter support rod
  • Installation requiring center console removal and between seats (1-2 hours)
  • This causes the entire shift pattern to move back
  • Reduction is a claimed 40%

TWM

  • An adapter plate that is placed on top of the control arm assembly
  • Installation is under the hood, on top of the tranny, and very easy (10 minutes)
  • This causes the entire shift pattern to move forward
  • Reduction is a claimed 30%

B&M

  • Replaces the shifter lever and most of the control device assembly
  • Installation is similar to NISMO, underneath center console and between seats (1-2 hours)
  • This causes the entire shift pattern to move toward the right
  • Reduction is a claimed 40%
  • Problems with bending or breaking the shift cables, retainer popping out
  • B&M is offering upgrade pieces to alleviate these problems

What happens if I combine any of these short shifters?
-The only combo that has been tested is the NISMO and TWM. Shifts are very short and difficulty from 2nd to 3rd has been reported. Generally this is not recommended, most users seem satisfied with one product
