There's no set rules for bumping, just do it when you think it's appropriate. (like once or twice per 24 hours, don't do it every 5 mins)

What I understand is that the brain is necessary. To be honest I don't know how much tho. I'm pretty sure it controls the DVD/CD etc. functions. If you don't have it it's pretty much just like having a monitor, BUT once again I'm not sure how much it'll work w/o it. You might be able to hook up a PS2 or XBOX to it and use that to play dvds or use the monitor w/ another HU and play cds.......... Personally I'd reccomend just buying the brain and keep everything as it's suppost to be. The brain's not just an accessory and IS necessary to get everything out of the indash DVD b/c the indash just can't hold all the electronics necessary, not enough space.

Bottom line, without the brain you can't do jack ****. You'll just have a screen that's looks nice. Thats why when you buy brand new the brain is included.
