View Full Version : Wire strippers
Gandalf 01-29-2004, 03:29 AM Ok, so I have not been able to find a decent wire stripper anywhere. I bought a cheap *** stripper/crimper and the damn thing might as well have been a butter knife the way it cut. SO I kept it for crimping and bought a nicer stripper, but after trying to use it on my 12 guage wire it just keps cutting right through the copper strands too, even using the 10 guage hole it still severs a couple strands. I re-read the package and it says for solid wire 20-10 AWG. SO damn, do they make ones specifically for stranded wire? Or am I gonna have to go back to using my pocket knife to strip wires? (Does anyone make a large gauge stripper? 10 seems to be the largets I've found).
have you checked out radio shack?
they have a few different kinds.
the one i bought was about $7.
also, i've seen some friends use one of those torch lighters to burn the rubber, then strip the wire.

Gandalf 01-29-2004, 08:38 PM yeah, my current wire stripper is klein, and it does a great job cutting through the insulation. Problem is is cuts right through the damn strands too. I'm thinking maybe I got one ONLY meant to cut solid wire, I'll go back tomorrow and see if they sell one specifically for stranded wire.
2001 SE #2 01-29-2004, 10:44 PM yeah there are strippers designed for solid wire only, and then there are strippers that can do both. My guess is you go the solid-only ones so that's why you're having problems.
Noggin 01-29-2004, 11:21 PM man... **** all those strippers. they're all worthless ****. Might be good construction, but they're all still a complete waste of time. Let me find the GOOD ****. You don't even have to tug... these things are automatic and don't cost all that much.
Gimmie a few...
2001 SE #2 01-29-2004, 11:25 PM you mean the ones that have a grabber and a stripper, and they grab onto the wire and then split apart, stripping the wire themselves?
Noggin 01-29-2004, 11:30 PM http://hgm3.redmartian.org/Misc/Images/stripper.jpg
The strippers "default" position is open clamp / open bite. You place the wire in position and begin to squeeze the handle. The camp and the bite come down, the clamp holdes the wire in place and the bite cuts through the insulation. Squeeze more and the jaw and bite move in opposite directions, pulling off a section of insulation. When you begin to release the handles, the jaw opens up and lets you pull the wire out, and when the handles are fully released the jaw and bite snap back to the default position.
You can easily strip up to 100 wires a minute, no exaggeration, when you get used to them. Easily.

Yep. These mutha ****ers are the SHIZ NIT!
Edit: I've seen them at Sears in Hattiesburg for $13. I should have bought them then.
2001 SE #2 01-29-2004, 11:40 PM yea those ones kick ***
I really need to get me a pair of those ones. I was spoiled doing all my wiring at my parent's house where my dad has all these fun tools.
03blackout 01-29-2004, 11:43 PM those are the same brand as my crimpers... i cant live without those crimpers... i keep them in my tool box in my trunk at all times... especially handy for emergency calls from friends when they're having stereo problems....
im going to sears to see if i can pick up those strippers tomorrow

boooo. $25 minimum order is required. ****.
Noggin 01-29-2004, 11:45 PM i'm buying some soon. I spend SOOO much time stirpping wires at work making cables its not funny. And trying to strip a 40 pin ribbon cable with regular strippes is almost impossible, unless you don't care if some of the wires are inches shorter than others. Its too easy to cut the whole wire.
I need these wire strippers, my own soldering station, a dremel (got one here at hom), a butane soldering iron, a good screwdriver set with changable tips, and torx head screwdriver bits, preferably security torx. I don't know why the hell those mech engineers insist on using torx head screws... they know none of us electrical guys have the tools to take them damn atm's apart like that.
