View Full Version : Lookin into a new headunit
exterraman 01-23-2004, 10:29 PM I've been lookin around at new head units and came across the Panasonic MXE CQ-C3400U (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-my0MzTyiNMs/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=62700&I=133C3400&o=m&a=1&cc=01&avf=Y). I was wonderin: A) does anyone have it, and B) does anyone knows if its good or not. For now my plans are to just hook up a pair of subs to it and eventually upgrade the speakers. Thanks.
sentrabeast 01-24-2004, 01:57 PM I dont have that exact HU, but i have the next step up, the Panasonic 903U. It is super sweet and has everything that i wanted, MP3, sub out, and all that other fun stuff. But be careful which amp you go with, sometimes the HU likes to put out a little too much volts for the amp, and it will go into protective mode. All around they are great HU's and I wouldnt trade mine for anything, except maybe that Brittney Spears girl.

what?
that makes no sense
CheezX 01-24-2004, 04:15 PM I thought about getting that, but instead got the Clarion DXZ735Mp http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-lhCNKyovlUs/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=62700&I=020DXZ735M&o=m&a=0&cc=01&avf=N for about $10 more at crutchfield a little while ago. It's like the panasonic cept it has multiple LED colors, which I wanted. Maybe you should check that one out as well. Otherwise, I saw the panasonic one at bestbuy and it looked pretty nice.
SpecVracer315 01-24-2004, 05:00 PM i have a panasonic CQ-DFX 99 HU just sitting in my room. interested? i'll give you a really good deal.
DevlynSyde 01-24-2004, 08:00 PM Damn dood, why aren't you using the DFX 99 again?
Immoble 01-24-2004, 08:13 PM Panasonics are good headunits... I personally would have never gotten mine if it wasn't free or didn't have sick graphics like mine has because there was nothing wrong with stock one (looked best in my mind)... I've got an Alpine 9807 MP3 headunits sitting in my room and I'm still debating wether i'm gonna put it in or not... make me a reasonable price on the Alpine and it's yours dude..

never had time to install it. i had a jeep cherokee sport, but that was a leased car, returned that and bought the spec, and basically my stock radio doesn't bother me much. i guess you could say im not a big car audio guy, but i did buy the deck back when i was thinking about just making the jeep all ICE'd out.
anybody interested in buying it, do PM me.

I'm goin with a 760 watt pioneer amp.
One more question,
How do panasonic head units compare with pioneer's?

Well, I thought that it didnt make any sense either, for a long time. I originally put the HU into my car and everything was going fine, then my protection light came on. We checked everything, RCA's, ground, raplaced the amp, you name it, we checked it. Until we stumbled across something, the HU was having major fluctuations in terms of the amount of volts it was giving out. http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-OkegZ5fkyVH/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=62700&I=133DFX983&o=m&a=0&cc=01&avf=N go to the website and see for yourself that it has a 5 volt preamp output, but mine didnt stay stable and caused it to go into protect mode.

You should be fine, the only mess up was that I got a bad HU, but i got a new one and it works fine now. Personally, I would just stick with the panasonic. They are good HU's, almost all of them are MOSFET, and they all have crystal clera graphics.

Honestly, Pioneers are good. I had several Pioneers in the past., However, when my Premier 840MP took a dump 4 months after I had it, I was a little aggravated.
I have had my alpine for over a year now. I won't ever buy another brand of headunit. They are made like tanks, have awesome tuning abilities, timing control, subwoofer control, 4 volt preouts, great skip protection.
Consider a nice alpine while you are shopping, especially if you are definitely getting an amp. Buy something without an internal amp. It will just be a waste to have the internal amp.
smittywitaspec 01-28-2004, 10:47 AM I have the 840mp and love it
over a year now (hope mine doesn't take a dump)
Joe M 01-28-2004, 10:51 AM The motorized face would keep opening and closing, cycling. As such, it wouldn't play any more. 3 months......

Uh, the RCAs carry the signal, the voltage is supposed to fluxuate. The only way RCAs can send an amp into protection is in an extreme circumstance. You're looking at a headunit with 20V preouts with the volume maxed, causing the amp to go into severe clipping even at minimal gains and go into protection. Other than that case, it's nearly impossible. All they do is carry a constantly fluxuating voltage signal to the amp, that's it.
DevlynSyde 01-28-2004, 10:29 PM How did you determine what voltage the HU was putting out? :P

I have a sophisticated team of midgets working round the clock on my audio system. No, I have a voltage meter and a pretty nice half um butted(?) shop in my garage.
DevlynSyde 01-30-2004, 06:26 PM And did you compare the HU to any others results? To me, if the thing is sending an amp into protection you either have gains to high or its defective... :)
MeHCHiNEE 01-30-2004, 07:02 PM i want the cq-9700u

Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner. As I said earlier in the thread, I did have a defective HU, it was sending a bad signal to my amp. But I got it replaced within a week and the new one is awesome.

Did not notice there were 4 days passed btwn this and the statement that you had got another HU... quick replacement. I suppose I should have replied to the post then :)
sentrabeast 01-30-2004, 07:44 PM It's all good in the hood. No problems. I actually like it when people ask me questions, it makes me feel smarter, even though I know that I am really not. I had a bad HU, then I got it replaced. It is no problem.
DevlynSyde 01-30-2004, 08:31 PM I obviously needed the Cliff Notes version as I'm to stupid to read the whole post :)
AntonToo 01-30-2004, 09:40 PM I'm a noob as far as sound systems go,
I heard something about that you can't chage stock Rockford Fosgate sound system on 02+ Se-R's by pieces (speakers or head unit or amp) but u have to redo the whole system.
I just wanted to swap my speakers to a nice pioneer set(don't feel like draging face plate everywhere i go) and was just wondering if that woud be a problem.
sentrabeast 01-31-2004, 01:22 PM I dont see why it shouldnt be a problem, just as long as you get your connections right. Although, you may want to be careful as to whether or not you use the stock amp, depending on output of speakers. If it is gonna be too much for the amp to hold, I suggest taking the stock amp, running it to your mids, get a new amp and the subs and run those together, should be ok.

I can't imagine why that would be the case. I have a spec V, so it may be a little bit different... But I can't imagine not being able to change out your stock HU or anything else, on it's own.

Spec V is an Se-R (type of) and I do have spec V.
I don't get it, did u actually change something for your system or are you just "imagining"?
seven6ty 02-01-2004, 05:29 AM I've swapped out my Head Unit and Sub, then added an amp and capacitor.

Pioneer is pretty much superior over most HU's these days. For CD read quality and just overall bang for the buck not much out there can beat a Pioneer. Even Alpine is starting to fade away in the market. Even at its peak Alpine was maybe a little better, maybe as for quality, but not for price.

If you'd notice, I quoted the portion where you said that they are superior to pretty much any HU out there. Best bang for the buck? Depends on what you are looking for now doesn't it. All around SQ HU? The Nak is still top notch and its not expensive. Alpine Units w/o MP3 capability still don't come at much more than the Pioneers. Now if you'd clarified it to Pioneer Premiers then it would atleast be something worth discussing... but even then... Pioneer is alright if you want killer lil' graphic things tho... wow... flying dolphins.

sentrabeast 02-03-2004, 02:06 AM Hey guys, everybody has their own personal preference. You gotta think of HU's in terms of chicks.
