bmartin807 08-05-2006, 09:52 PM Please let me know what types of beer you all like. I am drinking with one of my long time friends whom just graduated AIT training for the army. We are in this heated debate on types of beer which are good. I like several types of beer. He is into Miller light. Which i like, but if I am going to buy beer, I will buy Bud select or bud light. He tells me, "I pee darker than bud light" lol. I love several, I'm just saying I will buy bud. What types of beer do you all drink? or rather, What types of beer would you all buy (meaning like the best)?
motorpotor 08-05-2006, 10:08 PM Im a Heinken, Amstel Light, New Castle, Becks, Carlsburg, Moosehead, Molson, Henry Weinhard's Northwest Trail. Tend to buy what ever's cheaper.
per1patetic1dio 08-05-2006, 10:13 PM Hit up that new castle brown ale, i strongly second that. Select is good for beer pong, football games, getting drunk- it goes down smooth. Try celebrating with some new castle, eating with some new castle, sleeping with some new castle- you'll be glad you did.
bmartin807 08-05-2006, 10:16 PM yeah, new castle is not bad at all either. im always in the mood for some ales.

motorpotor 08-05-2006, 10:33 PM Guiness is too thick for me. Iv been to their Brewery in Dublin pretty neat. Iv tried something called Hobgoblin Ale. Not too my liking, had a toffee undertone to it. Tennets is a good Scottish bear

The two that I do find I really like are Amber Bock and Mississippi Mud.

bmartin807 08-06-2006, 01:36 AM yeah, I like killian's too. sounds like thephilosopher like his Irish. I'm Irish too. I love the Guiness and Irish lagers and ales. But, I seem to drink domestic beers most of the time due to price and easy to drink a lot of.
motorpotor 08-06-2006, 01:40 AM I forgots the Killians
ThePhilosopher 08-06-2006, 01:52 AM I prefer Belgian but it's just damn expensive to drink all the time.

remixt_322 08-06-2006, 08:50 AM Boddington is good if you're into that kinda stuff but I'd say that Tennants is my favorite but it's so damn expensive so I usually stick with the good ol' Canadian East Coast ales: Moosehead and Alexander Keith's

SENTRA GTU 08-06-2006, 09:49 AM My favorite styles of beer (in no particular order)
Stouts:
Guinness - From Ireland, its alcoholic content and "dry" flavor are both characterized as light, although it varies from country to country.
Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout - Samuel Smith, Tadcaster, England
Sierra Nevada Stout - From California.
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Young's Oatmeal Stout
Black Chocolate Stout brewed by Brooklyn Brewery
Porters:
Anchor Porter from Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco, California
Fuller's London Porter from Fuller, Smith and Turner in Chiswick, England

Barley Wines:

Bigfoot Ale from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
Dangling Fury 08-06-2006, 11:01 AM German beer, and I mean real German beer you can't find here in the U.S. is the absolute best.
My favorite is Koelsch beer found in the Cologne area (where I grew up), it's a clear beer with a bright yellow hue and less bitter than most others, yet still has close to 5% alcohol. It's been brewed there since 874, so it's got some history.
Another favorite is German Altbier which looks like a dark malt, resulting in a nuttier taste, found in Duesseldorf which is close to Cologne. My godfather's hot air ballon is sponsored by one of the Altbier brewers and he gets free beer :).

Bud Select taste just as schitty as regular bud. It is a light lager, and probably one of the worst examples of that style. So, you actually like light lagers as a "type of beer." I would suggest trying a Lumpy Dog from Rock Bottom. Other than that, light lagers dont really offer much. Why dont you look into some regular lagers? Brooklyn Lager by the Brooklyn
Brewing Company.

Excellent taste! If you enjoy the Chimay, then you should try the other Trappist ales. Orval, Westmalle, Achel, and Westvleteran are wonderful (though I havent tried Westvleteran).

Maybe in NC, but in Chitown we can get most of the best German brews. As for the small non distributed breweries, oh well. They have less quality control.

Not only have I had it, I am a diehard fan that buys certain seasonals when they are released every year. The Bigfoot Barleywine is hoppy and tasty. I buy it every year.
cburwell 08-06-2006, 12:53 PM Has anyone had Strongbow? It's not really a beer (I think it is considered a hard cider), but it's damn good. It is imported from England, so you might have a tuff time finding it, and when you do it's not cheap. It also has a better taste from a bottel then from a can, so if you can go with the bottels.
motorpotor 08-06-2006, 01:00 PM Funny story with Strongbow. I was in Scotland last summer with a tour group. One of the last nights all the tours ended up at this one Hostel for one big party. I had bought some beer from the local store, but later ran out. So being the night was still young I went to a pub next door. Didnt recognize anthing on tap, so I took a Strongbow. I didnt know it was a cider. It was kinda of fruity. So I didnt finish it and went back to my room. Apprently I was pretty drunk because my fellow travelers told me I was a riot the night before, especially when I told em of my Strongbow tail while I was drunk. I think its funny, may just be waste of typed space:)
bmartin807 08-06-2006, 01:30 PM Yeah, I would love to try some other German lagers. But there is no "dist" here, It's a beach, so they sell what sells most. I love the yuenling lager though. I wish they had more beer to offer for sale other than the basics. I came from PA, the dists there had hundreds of different kinds of beer my family would try often. But here, I'm extremely limited to pretty much domestic. They just started selling yuenling here about six months ago. People love it here. I say they should start bringing in more lagers as well. I never had strongbow, but I am also a fan of old foghorn. My family keeps a strong supply of the foghorn. They are crazy about their wines.

Is the Rogue XS IPA worth the cost, I've been wanting to try it but it makes Chimay look cheap.
Also does anyone else like Sam Adams White Ale?

Sam Adams Whits is ok. The Rogue XS line is overprices due to the packaging.
signaldammit 08-06-2006, 09:58 PM Rogue's prices are harsh, but the beer is good. I'm a big fan of the Shakespeare Stout and Über Pilsner.
We have a restaurant/microbrewery called Brew Moon that does a seasonal Loco Mocha Stout. It's to die for...and 9% ;]
For everyday drinking, +189,349,000 Guinness. I'm drinkin' Stella Artois when I'm not in a thicker-beer mood.
A little off topic, but have you guys seen the Red Stripe commercials lately?
jnaks 08-07-2006, 04:24 AM hmm, here we go again. Hahaha, hey signal, didn't we just have this conversation? We gotta set up a beer party!
oh well, here are my votes:
Easy ones: Sam Adams, Killians Red, New Castle, Guiness.
Harder to get: Gordon Bierch Winter Lager (haven't had it since 2004, but loved every drop of the 5 pints we drank. Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. John Courage -- finally found it again at YardHouse.
Sidenote: Tried Rasputen, hated it -- tasted more like old shoyu (soy sauce).
Raverjames21 08-07-2006, 06:47 AM My favorite "type" of beer would be barleywine.
My favorite beers would be the following:
Favorite Light colored beer-
Dogfish Head Golden Shower Imperial Pilsner (9% abv)
http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/29395.jpg
It's golden colored and crisp. There is more flavor packed in that bottle than alot of the darker beers out there.
Favorite Pale Ale-
Goose Island Reserve Series Imperial IPA (9% abv)
http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/14366.jpg
Hoppy, bitter, and complex. This beer is powerful, but way too damn expensive at $18 a 4-pack.
Favorite Brown-
Bell's Best Brown Ale (5.75% abv)
http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/1924.jpg
This is what all brown ales should taste like. Newcastle is bland and boring compared to this brew.
Favorite Barleywine-
Brooklyn Brewery Monster Ale '2000 (11.8% abv)
http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/2231.jpg
The bottles brewed in 2000 were way better than any other year. This beer is way too complex for most people, and packs a ton of hops cooled off by some sweetness.
Favorite Stout (and favorite current beer)-
Founders Kentucky Breakfast Strout (10% abv)
http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/19960.jpg
This is a very hard to find beer due to the limited release and fact that the damn beer geeks buy it up as soon as it hits the stores. I had 4 bottles @ $6 a bottle, and I feel they were worth every penny. This is a super dark Stout with lots of coffee flavor, topped off with a hint of bourbon and oak. If I had to pick one beer to drink for the rest of my life, it would be this brew.
ok. Thats all I got for now. I will find some more time later to add some other styles.

Steve had mentioned the same thing. I guess the food isnt as good either. That is sad to hear because that place was the last hope for good beer in Motown. You guys should come out to Chicago some time. We really cant go out and shoot guns all day with beers next to us, but we have some of the best brew pubs and bars in the country. I am in Wichita right now, as usual, and they have a decent brew pub as well. Go River City brewery. It isnt Goose Island, but it kicks arse for KS.

Triple bock is crap but double bock is nice and tasty. Sam Adams Chocolate is good. Have you had some of the Dogfish Raison D'Etre or Raison D'Extra yet? Those are both awesome. Also, the Dogfish Burton Baton is mighty good.
once370lbs 08-09-2006, 10:34 AM PBR is the in beer around the Columbus, OH short north gay district. I confess I like it, and no Im not.
pugnex 08-09-2006, 10:37 AM I've had raison d'etre a few times. It's not bad. I want to find a bottle of the raison d'extra when it comes out in sept.
I also really like saison's. Ommegangs saison is great. I tried a lindemans lambic....but know it's more mainstream. When I feel like I have the cash to waste, I'm gonna try some cantillons to see just how sour the lambics can be.

Have you tried Victory V-Saison? It is one of the better saisons I have tried. 3 Floyds Rabbid Rabbit Saison was ok, but the label on the bottle made it worth the money.

pugnex 08-09-2006, 11:00 AM Nope...haven't had the victory.
Can't get FFF in MA, closest is an hour away in RI.

I never heard of BPR untill I moved out of Columbus. Of course I didnt spend much time in german village....you sure you're not? ;) :D
Paraskass 08-09-2006, 11:21 AM I loved Hoegaarden before my trip to Belgium in March. When I arrived there I had the BEST Hoegaarden in the world. I tried all the variations they had. They were all so delicious. Even the caned Hoegaarden beer was exceptional. It was actually better than the bottled one I buy here. It wasn't fizzy at all and tasted even better than Hoegaarden on tap here.
Now, Hoegaarden here doesn't taste as good as I know it could, but it's still my favorite.

Raverjames21 08-09-2006, 01:47 PM You went to Belgium and the best thing you drank was Hoegaarden? That is like Belgian Bud Light. I was in Italy and found 20 different Belgian microbrews that were awesome. If I was in Belgium, I would be drinking some Westvleteran since they dont export and you have to buy it from the monks. Hell, even the trappist ales we get in america that suffer possible shipping contamination is 100 times better than Hoegaarden in Europe. It is like going to Germany and saying your favorite beer was Warsteiner.
pugnex 08-09-2006, 01:50 PM You can buy westvleteren online...but it's $25 a bottle.
Raverjames21 08-09-2006, 01:59 PM You can buy westvleteren online...but it's $25 a bottle.
I know, but it is expensive and wrong. The monks do not wish for the beer to be distributed or resold. I will wait for my chance to visit belgium.
pugnex 08-09-2006, 02:00 PM Yeah, I won't buy it...don't need God getting angry cause I dissed the monks :D
There's a beer bar around here that has St Bernardus 12 on tap...I gotta go there.
One of the restaurants around here had westvleteren on their online menu, but it wasn't at the restaurant itself....I was disappointed. Instead I paid $9 for a rochefort 10...
Boris T 08-10-2006, 09:57 PM ^ Agreed, those are excellent. I try to pick up the Spotted Cow when I go camping at Bong State Rec Area just west of Kenosha.
At this moment, my current favorite is Two Brothers Golden Ale. Two Bros is a small brewery in Warrenville, IL.
I consider myself more of a beer connoiseur, rather than a snob. I know the difference between good beer and bad beer. But I'll drink anything. :D
Oh... Like the sound of the beer connoiseur. I, too, drink most beer, especially if it is free.
I will look for the Two Bros when I am in Illinois next time.
mirrortints 08-11-2006, 08:03 AM My favorite type is cold beer.
petergunz25 08-11-2006, 02:04 PM My favorite beer is Smithwicks. Smithwicks is a lighter version of Guiness.
Guiness recently purchased this beer and started bring it to taps in the U.S.. As of a few weeks ago, they started bottling the stuff here too..

Or people in holland and Heineken... ahh warsteiner the label literally means king of beers...sounds familiar huh

That is a nice hoppy one. Victory Hopdevil is similar. Jp is picking up some Stones Vertical Epic for me in Cali. That makes me as happy as a little girl.:o
pugnex 08-12-2006, 08:05 AM I've got Stone out here. Never tried any of it though.

Raverjames21 08-12-2006, 12:24 PM James you been to Stone in San Diego?
JP is going on monday. I have never been. It would be fun though.
david 08-12-2006, 12:53 PM I've been to both of their breweries. They make great beer.
pugnex 08-12-2006, 02:27 PM Stone is a top brewery. Def. give them a try.
Haven't seen any type of brew from them that I want to try...maybe I'll pick up some arrogant bastard though.
SpeC-V_Freak 08-12-2006, 02:49 PM IPA too
motorpotor 08-12-2006, 04:07 PM Oh I also like Sam Adams lager
jnaks 08-14-2006, 03:35 PM damn tried some Belgium Golden Draak this weekend--suppossedly some decent stuff...but i was a bit disappointed. Had a sort of Rasputen type taste, but not really to my liking.
signaldammit 08-14-2006, 08:00 PM Tried the Spaten Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse last night. Fricken good stuff. Also tried Spaten's Optimator... a lot of people liked it, but I wasn't feeling it too much.

red stripe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pugnex 08-15-2006, 10:04 AM you talking about Bukouski's
No, The Public House I believe. Sunset might've had it at one time or another. Bukouski's in inman has a decent bottle selection.
NoSocks 08-15-2006, 10:32 AM Coors Light.
And that is all I will drink.
If they don't have it. I don't drink.

You can buy absinthe at Binny's in the Chicago area. No absinthe currently sold anywhere in the world has true hallucinogenic effects. I brought back some of the strongest from Italy. JP and I got pretty damn drunk off of it but that is about it. There are some sites online that explain how all the absinthe is non hallucinogenic today. Back 100 years ago the stuff was stronger.

Petro 08-15-2006, 01:38 PM Man, do i want a damn beer right now!
Hey river, any idea of the alc. content in an Alagash White?
for some reason those things seem to do me over more than deliriums.

Really ..thats it
wow for some reason i thought it was in the 8 range.
I have never been to the Bukouski's in Inman. I imagine it is bigger than the one off Boylston. and less bike messangers?
I really have to get out near your way more often. my parts are saturated with art school douches and northeastern dudes.
pugnex 08-15-2006, 02:24 PM I've only been to the one in inman once, during lunch. I haven't really been to any bars in ages, gettin too old :p
